Cathay Pacific seeks Hong Kong-based direct-entry First Officers for regional, long-haul and ultra-long-haul flying opportunities.

Cathay Pacific is accepting applications for Hong Kong-based direct-entry First Officers. Successful candidates may be assigned to the A321neo, A330, A350, Boeing 777 or Boeing 747 according to operational requirements; an existing type rating is not listed as mandatory.

Applicants require an ICAO ATPL, or CPL with MEIR and same-state ATPL examination credits, a Class 1 medical and ICAO English Level 4 or higher. The minimum is 1,500 total hours—although 3,000 is preferred—including 500 hours as P1, with no more than 250 counted as P1 under supervision. Additional qualifying multi-crew aircraft experience and recency conditions apply according to aircraft weight and configuration.

Contrary to the screenshot, Cathay does not specify an EASA licence or an existing right to work in Hong Kong as universal minimum requirements. Candidates must satisfy detailed HKCAD licence-conversion rules and pass medical, drug, criminal-record and background checks. Always compare your logbook against the complete official criteria before applying.

Your pilot can be completely legal to fly and still be tired.

That’s the warning coming from UK pilots as BALPA says increased flying, tighter schedules and demanding rosters are putting more pressure on crews, with maximum working limits increasingly being treated as targets rather than limits.

UK airline pilots operate under strict fatigue rules. Crew can be assigned up to 60 duty hours across seven consecutive days, 110 across 14 days and 190 across 28 days. Actual flying is capped at 100 hours in 28 days, 900 hours in a calendar year and 1,000 across 12 consecutive months.

But fatigue isn’t simply a stopwatch. Early starts, overnight flying, changing time zones, disrupted sleep and consecutive duties can leave two pilots with identical working hours feeling very different.

That’s why airlines must manage fatigue beyond simply keeping pilots inside the legal numbers, while pilots themselves are required to report when fatigue becomes a concern.

BALPA is now gathering more evidence from pilots as the CAA reviews the rules.
