Digital design has opened new doors for creators who want to enter the world of fashion. Alternative media is already a reality and growing as new tools are born and technologies continue to develop.

FashionUnited magazine spoke to 3 digital designers who are revolutionising the industry.

Davina India works on designs that fuse organic shapes and futurism. During her fashion studies she discovered her love for avant-garde style. Today, thanks to technology, she can create her own pieces and assures that "digitalisation cannot be stopped".

Xtended Indentity, a group composed of designers Yunjia Xing, Ziqi Xing and Aria Bao came together during the difficulties of Covid to develop a digital showroom, where today, through AR, users can wear the group's digital clothing and apparel.

Yimeng Yu, a freelance designer who has explored the digital world for his work, says that digital fashion "provides a sustainable way to greatly improve design efficiency and can also be linked to smart manufacturing and precise counterpoint production".

Another example that points to the coming together of fashion and technology.

Copenhagen Fashion Week has earned its reputation as the "green" week this August.
The event will stay true to its ethical and sustainable roots with a focus on remake, reuse and recycle.

The collection calendar for next season is now closed in Denmark. Street-style and sustainability have been the protagonists on the catwalks. Avant-garde design and its ethical commitment are much more than just an idea, they herald the coming trends in the fashion industry. Do you agree?

Italian brand Ferragamo has launched its first sustainable trainer for the autumn/winter 2022 collection.

Another brand that opts for a less harmful option for the environment with the combination of responsible materials and high technology. Its upper is made of econyl fibres, 100% derived from fishing nets and other nylon waste. Its production process is also carbon-reduced. The leather in the insole and lining is chrome-free tanned leather. And the thread used for the stitching is 100% recycled polyester.

It's a combination of sustainable practices that demonstrates just how many options fashion has on the road to environmental responsibility.

We are in the middle of a global date to value the most essential natural resource: water.

World Water Week 2022 is being held in Stockholm and addresses the theme "seeing the invisible: the value of water". It is a strategic point to reflect on the problems of its scarcity and to trigger proposals, solutions, innovations and investments to improve its management.

The textile industry has a great responsibility in this matter as one of the main water consumers in the world. And we, as seekers of innovative solutions in the sector for a more sustainable industry, want to support the cause.

For a responsible consumption, happy World Water Week.

Last year, the fashion industry invested between 1.6 and 1.8 per cent of its revenues in technology. This is expected to rise sharply to 3.5 per cent by 2023, according to a recent McKinsey report.

This is due to the conviction of many that technological development will translate into competitive advantage for companies and customers with a focus on operations. Robotics, data analytics and in-store applications are expected to streamline processes and support a more sustainable industry over the next 8 years.

McKinsey and Business of Fashion identified five key technology themes that will help the industry address today's challenges: metaverse reality check, hyper-personalisation, connected shops, end-to-end upgrading and traceability.

Can you think of any other key themes?

AI-based digital stylists and chatbots have already taken off. They provide customer feedback on clothing choices and suggest alternatives.

Among the most important examples in recent years is Amazon's StyleSnap, which, powered by AI, allows customers to upload photos of items they like in order to receive similar items. This function takes into account price range, reviews and other factors that further fine-tune personalisation.

Other giants such as Google and Facebook have also used the same technology with Google Lens and Fashion++ respectively. The latter analyses a person's outfit and suggests subtle alterations to one's styling, thus improving one's appearance.

Luxury brands are testing digital stylists in select markets through personalised online counselling. This is a field where fashion will undoubtedly find great opportunities in the future. What do you think?
