Last week, the Ritorno a Vulci Project had the great honour of welcoming Alfonsina Russo, Head of the DIVA - Dipartimento per la valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale, to our excavations of the Gsell Tumulus at Vulci. We are deeply grateful for her interest and support, and we look forward to continuing this collaborative effort to uncover and share the remarkable funerary heritage of ancient Vulci!

✨ Another exciting week for the Ritorno a Vulci Project !

⛏️ This week has already been marked by exciting discoveries, inspiring collaborations, and the pleasure of welcoming distinguished guests and friends to our project

🏛️ We were honoured by the friendly visit of Superintendent Margherita Eichberg and Simona Carosi of the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti Paesaggio Etruria Meridionale, Director Luana Toniolo of the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, President Laura Allegrini and Carlo Casi of the Fondazione Vulci. Their presence reflects the shared commitment that all brings us together to advance the understanding and protection of Vulci's extraordinary archaeological heritage. 🤝

🏺Meanwhile, our team continued the study at the Museo Archeologico di Vulci of the recuperi from the Polledrara area joined by our colleagues from the Department of Greece and Rome of the British Museum, Alexandra Villing, Curator of the Greek collections, and Kate Morton, Illustrator. Together we explored a series of fascinating Orientalising-period contexts that reveal the extraordinary wealth and Mediterranean connections of Vulci's elites during the 7th century BC. Every object, every fragment, every archive and new archaeological record adds another piece to the puzzle 🧩

✨ Meet the Directors ✨

Behind the Ritorno a Vulci Project are three archaeologists who launched this shared adventure in 2023: Laura Maria Michetti and Alessandro Conti from the Settore di Etruscologia e Antichità Italiche at Sapienza Università di Roma, and Christian Mazet, Curator of the Etruscan Collections at the British Museum

⛏️ As this first week of excavation comes to a close, work on the area of the Gsell Tumulus has continued to produce exciting discoveries. For now, we'll keep a little mystery... 👀 Stay tuned, we look forward to sharing these results with you at the right time!

⛏️ Four days into the 2026 field season, the Ritorno a Vulci Project is now excavating the area of the Gsell Tumulus!

Beyond research, our excavation is also a field school. Every day, Italian and French students work side by side, learning excavation methods, documentation, and archaeological interpretation under the guidance of our two wonderful sector supervisors from Sapienza Università di Roma, Manuela Bonadies and Simone Grosso.

🤝 The entire team is also committed to making our excavation an ethical field project. Guided by the clear Code of Conduct of the Association Archéo-Éthique, we strive to foster a safe, respectful, inclusive, and collaborative working environment, where everyone can learn, contribute, and thrive.

🚀 La stagione 2026 del Ritorno a Vulci Project è ufficialmente iniziata!

⛏️ Anche quest'anno la nostra squadra internazionale, che unisce l'École française de Rome, la Sapienza Università di Roma e il British Museum, torna a scavare a Vulci nell'area della Polledrara con un obiettivo: ritrovare il Tumulo Gsell

🏺 Parallelamente, un secondo gruppo di ricerca sarà impegnato nello studio dei materiali provenienti dall'area, conservati presso il Museo Archeologico di Vulci e Castello dell'Abbadia
