Big thanks to everyone who joined last night’s webinar where we discussed the AI approach to Direction of Photography.

Yes, we used Midjourney 8.1 despite it still being in Alpha—and yes, in our opinion, it is the best model for pre-production work right now.

Some quick takeaways for those who missed it:

It is all about the personalization --profile.

Lighting can be managed quickly by letting the --profile (presumably trained on specific aesthetics) do the heavy lifting—see the attached images.

Lighting can also be managed with extreme detail by intervening on intensity, direction, and temperature.

Test, test, test. Midjourney can react unpredictably to certain descriptive keywords. For instance, base color and temperature are much better regulated by specifying a film stock (even analog) rather than a Kelvin temperature, which tends to make the generation results quite unpredictable.

There’s a massive gap between using Midjourney "on the fly" and treating it as a professional tool for stylistic direction.

With 8.1, the style is driven by the moodboard, while the prompt handles the heavy lifting: composition and cinematography (Arri Alexa + Kodak Vision3 500T).

Saving you some time and generation credits. If you are looking for the specific rendering of a photo camera, movie camera, or film stock with Midjourney, first test your prompts with --profile none and an --s range between 150 and 350.

Because if "base" Midjourney cannot reconstruct the specific look & feel of that camera + film combination, it is unlikely to succeed with the interference of your profiles.

Uni-1 by Luma actually understands what you mean and its cinematic photographic quality is honestly impressive.

The idea of having a generative model that actually understands instructions is great. Add to that a visual output that comes incredibly close to cinematic photography (unlike GPT 1.5 or Nano Banana, for example). Then, expand the whole thing with Luma Agents, which take a visually solid concept and turn it into a finished product.

The ability to follow lighting, color, and aesthetics prompts with such precision really impressed me... Uni-1 did exactly what I asked (from the romantic & reassuring natural daylight, to the harsh cyberpunk neon colors), without "adding its own touch" with random props or over-processing the aesthetic with a look that’s too "AI" (which happens way too often with Nano Banana).

I’ve officially adopted Uni-1 as a new tool in my AI cinematography workflow 💜
