Following the disastrous s of 6th February 2023 in eastern , among the infinite number of damaged property, there were obviously elements in a large area spanning 11 cities, one of which .

Almost exactly one year after the events, we went to the Turkish city to execute tests together with .restorasyon on two historical ; the mosque of the village of "Sam" and the mosque of "Alaybey", both of which according to archival records date their origins back to the 16th century.

In both buildings, were done the structural experiments of:
🤓 Sonic pulse velocity measurement tests as an indicator to understand location-based stiffness variations on structural elements, based on the simple principle of differential propagation of sonic waves through voids and solids,
🤓 Double tests in order to determine the mechanical characteristics of the walls.

The bigger the range of structural tests strategically located and professionally executed the better; as particularly in the case of historical buildings, generic and hasty strengthening operations without a thorough understanding of the structure, in a global as well as localized perspective, is likely to do harm rather than good.

🔧 We investigate not only buildings and architecture, but basically anything that can (and can't) stand upright.

🏛 To be able to determine the state of conservation of an object, external inspection is obviously not enough - we need information indicating the internal conditions of the object. But these are statues and therefore all tests conducted have to be of non-destructive nature.

🏛 In our recent collaboration with the Municipality of Venice we determined the conservation state of two statues dating back to the 17th century, and evaluated the effects of the recent conservation interventions executed several years ago.

👉 Among conducted tests are:
🧐Georadar inspections (or Ground Penetrating Radar), to determine whether there are iron rebars inside of the statues as support or connection elements,
🧐Ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement, as an innovative method that provides reliable and numerico-statistical data on the stiffness of homogeneous (as in the case of the statues) materials.

Our recent campaign in Istanbul regarded several diagnostic tests in order to determine the mechanical and dynamic characteristics of the historical Venice Palace.

The tests included:
* Resistographic measurement to determine the inner state of the wooden beams of the roof,
* Core drilling samples of the reinforced concrete additions to the building dating back to the beginning of the 1900s,
* Video-endoscopy to better understand the stratigraphy of critical building sections.

The precision of the data obtained serves to better calculate the seismic response of the building, which in turn will lead to a more realistic strengthening intervention.

Here we are in , to conduct structural tests on the curious Sfintii Arhangheli Mihail si Gavril church originally built in late 16th century! It suffered several earthquakes in its lifetime, and hosts several non-original reparations including the enmeshment of a reinforced concrete frame dating to the 1980s. Our tests included:
- Core drilling on RC structure
- Rebar covermeter analysis, to determine the positioning and frequency of rebars inside of the R.C. frame,
- Double flatjack tests in order to determine the mechanical characteristics of the masonry walls,
- Sonic tests as an additional indicator to understand location-based stiffness variations based on the principle of different sonic propagation through voids and solids,
- Video-endoscopy for the inspections regarding wall stratigraphy,
- Infrared thermography to detect hidden structures inside of the built fabric,
- Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPRS) to localize the rebars inside of R.C. structures as well as to detect invisible problems like humidity,
- Dynamic test on tensile rods to determine the status quo tensile load acting on the rods.

The wide array of the tests serves to better simulate the seismic response(s) of the building which is expected to be complicated, stemming from its composite structure (reinforced concrete + masonry).

In addition, sonic tests results show clearly that walls belonging to the narthex and apse are in worse condition than the longitudinal body walls, fact which should be taken into consideration in later phases of the project.
