"Biografía de Jorge Luis Borges" is an ambitious and deeply personal journey into the mystery of one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, presented out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival.
Far removed from the traditional biographical format, Mariano Llinás. chooses to pursue Borges through what he left behind: books, letters, photographs, manuscripts, first editions, libraries, statues, maps and, above all, the places that shaped his life and imagination.
From Geneva to Buenos Aires, from Argentina to Uruguay, the documentary moves through real and imagined landscapes—two dimensions that, in Borges’s work, were never truly separate.
The writer emerges through the traces he left behind and through the distance between the worlds he imagined and the concrete places that inspired them.
Llinás’s quest becomes a personal, digressive, ironic and deliberately unresolved detective story: an obsessive investigation that, in its attempt to draw closer to Borges, ultimately makes his figure even more elusive.
More than five hours of cinema devoted to pursuing a writer who made literature the center of his existence, transforming labyrinths, memory, books and reality into an inexhaustible universe.
In the end, "Biografía de Jorge Luis Borges" is a film about the impossibility of completing the portrait of an author who made infinity, mystery and the unresolved the very heart of his work.
