When Machiavelli was exiled from Florence by the De Medici family, he was sent to San Casciano Val di Pesa. This is the cellar with an underground tunnel that allowed him access to the other wing of the property to the other side of the road. Today it is a gorgeous borgo (hamlet) with restaurant and outdoor dining spaces.
