Paper is so delicate yet so strong and versatile!
This week we are testing it treating one of most iconic lamps of 20th Century, "Akari" by Isamu Noguchi.

In 1951 he visited the town of Gifu, Japan, known for its manufacture of lanterns and umbrellas from mulberry bark paper and bamboo. Noguchi designed the first of his lamps that would be produced by the traditional Gifu methods of construction. He called these works Akari, a term meaning light as illumination, but also implying the idea of weightlessness.

The fabrication of Akari in Japan at Ozeki & Co. since 1951 follows the traditional methods for Japanese Gifu lanterns. Each Akari is handcrafted beginning with the making of washi paper from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. Bamboo ribbing is stretched across sculptural molded wood forms. The washi paper is cut into strips and glued onto both sides of the framework. Once the glue has dried and the shape is set, the internal wooden form is disassembled and removed. The outcome is a resilient paper form, which can be collapsed and packed flat for shipping.

If an artwork shows holes, or losses, the paper chosen to fill in this area will go through different considerations.

Many papers are out there for conservators to choose from. It’s great to have so many options, but picking the right one for your situation can be a challenge, especially for color.

You can buy pre-toned paper, or to get the perfect match sometimes you need to tone your own paper doing different tests 🎨

Today we gave 🔙 to Museo Civico P. A. GARDA in Ivrea one of our favourite object we worked on.

It's a rare example of weaving model in paper. It's made weaving very thin (about 1 mm) painted paper.

Conservation treatments were very challenging but we ❤️ it.
Take a look on our gallery to discover more😉

From 2th July you can see again this amazing object and the unbelievable collection. Highly recommend 🔝
