Doing nothing about retirement always feels like the safe option. On an island where the cost of living rarely moves in anyone's favour, it tends to be one of the more expensive ones.
The States pension was built as a foundation, not a finish line, and measured against Jersey prices, the distance between the two is wider than most people assume. The retirement most islanders have in mind (keeping the home they've worked years for, the freedom to travel, to help family, to step back when they choose rather than when they have to) sits comfortably above what the foundation alone provides.
The gap between that picture and the reality is where planning lives. And the earlier it's identified, the smaller the corrections need to be.
Every year of delay quietly shifts the work onto your future self: more to save, fewer years to compound, less room to manoeuvre. A plan doesn't remove the maths, it just takes it out of your future self's hands and puts it in yours.
The first conversation is on us. Usually easier to find out where you stand than to keep wondering.
