Why You Should Be Careful With Counterfeit Distilled Water (And How to Choose the Real Thing)
Not all distilled water is created equal. With more and more low-cost options appearing online, it’s important to know the difference between genuine steam distilled water and misleading imitations that can pose serious health and equipment risks.
What Is Counterfeit Distilled Water?
Some sellers are mislabeling deionised or filtered water as “distilled.” These low-quality alternatives may still contain:
Bacteria and microbes
Heavy metals
Hormones, pesticides, and chemical residues
That’s because only steam distillation completely removes both dissolved solids and biological contaminants.
Why It Matters: Health & Equipment Safety
Using impure water in sensitive equipment can be dangerous. For example:
In CPAP machines or nebulisers, contaminated water can release bacteria into the airways.
In laboratories, impurities can compromise test results.
In irons, humidifiers, or medical devices, mineral build-up or corrosion can occur.
