After working in HR and speaking with employees preparing to retire and with retirees, I've often heard persons say....

'I wish I had known...I wish someone had told me...'

This is why I shared a post every day this week highlighting things to avoid on the retirement journey...so that people will know.

This is also why I am offering my services to employees, and serving as a guide on the retirement journey.

I have 3 spaces available for July to work with employees (yes, this will be free💃). If you are on the retirement journey, thinking about retirement, have questions about things like work after retirement...
I hope I can work with you.

If you're interested, send me a message. If you're not sure and have questions- message me about that too.

There's more to HR than processing pension payments when you retire.

Avoid the mistake of not sharing your retirement plans with your HR team.

Job loss is not a comfortable topic.

Having worked in HR for several years, I have advised different employees that their positions were being impacted for various reasons.

I have also experienced job loss through redundancy.

In this post, I highlight a mistake employees make on the road to retirement...assuming they will always be employed.

Job loss can be particularly difficult if it occurs when an employee is nearing retirement... especially since getting another job can be very difficult for older workers.

As you consider your retirement journey, remember that job loss is a possibility...ensure you have plans in place to respond, if it becomes your reality.

The Final Five!

This is a term that refers to the five years (the last five years) before retirement.

Not making plans during the Final Five is one of the mistakes employees make on their retirement journey. Please don't make this mistake.

Use the final five to be very deliberate about your plans and next steps as you work on designing the next Chapter .

Today I'm sharing a snippet from the guide on alternatives to traditional retirement.

In some instances employees aren't aware of the alternatives that are available, so they opt for traditional retirement.

But, at least one alternative that can be considered instead, is 'phased retirement.'

For the organization, this approach offers benefits like:

* maintaining business continuity

* retaining key employees until knowledge transfer takes place

* reducing costs associated with training new employees

For employees, this approach is also beneficial since it:

* allows employees to gradually ease into retirement

* allows employees to still earn an income

* facilitates exploration of alternative employment opportunities, like consulting, while working

When thinking about retirement, consider options to the traditional route.

The guide in the comments section has all the info in one document- if you don't want to wait for the daily post.

So this week I thought I'd share some info that I hope will help people on their retirement journey.

Each day I will post a mistake that people make on the road to retirement ...and I will share suggestions on what could be done instead.

I figure if we are aware of the mistakes, then we can avoid them. Right?
..better than doing something that might not serve us well.

If you are thinking about retirement, nearing retirement, if your employees are retiring, your neighbour, or your friend! 😄 this info should be useful....please share.

If you don't want to wait for the daily post, you can check the link in the comments for the full document.

If you have anything to add, please drop it in the comments section.

As May comes to an end, I am sharing a guide for employees which highlights mistakes they should avoid as they navigate the retirement journey...and how these mistakes can be avoided.

Avoiding these mistakes can contribute to a successful retirement, and can assist with older persons remaining involved in work, if they wish to.

The guide is useful for persons at any stage...1 year from retirement, 5 years, 10 years....it doesn't matter.

The link is in the comments section and below.

Please share it with someone who might benefit.

I received this message after sharing my last article on Loop.

In that article, I shared tips on how organizations can help employees to prepare for retirement. While some employees look forward to retirement, others genuinely fear this next phase of life.

The article resonated for this person, because I touched on four key areas:

* Communication

* Financial Planning

* Phased/ Flexible Transition

* Mentorship

Each month I post an article on Loop with various tips on ageing in the workplace. I also share the articles on my social media platforms.

I gear the articles towards HR professionals, Business Owners and Employees who are preparing to leave the workforce.

If you have any questions about workplace ageing, or if you have questions after reading an article, please let me know.

Also, if there is a specific topic you would like me to write about, please let me know that too.

Send me a message-happy to connect.

Do you host Retirement Planning Workshops for your employees?

Several organizations host retirement planning workshops, and these workshops often focus on things like Health Insurance, Financial Planning, Estate planning etc.

But what of Career planning?

* Are you including post career discussions in your sessions?

* Are you discussing career options in retirement?

* Are you offering career "check ups" for your employees?

The years before retirement can bring feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. But with planning, we can help our employees to prepare for retirement. Proper planning also means we put things in place for business continuity.

If you haven't yet prepared your schedule for retirement planning workshops - now is a good time to do this.

Let's get retirement ready.

A few months ago, I joined Golden Designs to discuss career preparation for employees approaching retirement. In our conversation we discussed different things retirees can do if they wish to remain in, or re-enter the workforce. In our discussion I shared that retirees should:

* Get comfortable with social media platforms since these platforms are good networking tools and provide opportunities for connecting with potential employers.

*Embrace opportunities to work remotely (even if it may take some getting used to).

*Be open to career changes. Retirement is a good time to work in a new field.

*Consider entrepreneurship and use their skills for Business purposes.

Importantly, I mentioned the importance of revising the resume/CV. Having a good resume can be an important tool in the job search when retirees are job hunting and re entering the job market.

If you have already retired, these tips should be useful to you. For persons still in the workforce, it's not too early to make plans for retirement.... happy to help if you want to connect.

We are in the middle of Q2 and many persons are making plans for what they will accomplish for the remainder of the year. This is good. As you make your 2022 plans however, I want to remind you to also think about your retirement plans.

* Have you though about your retirement?

* Have you thought about career plans as you approach retirement?

* Have you thought about career plans beyond retirement?

* If you are an employer, how are you preparing your employees for retirement? Do you know what to do?

Let's discuss retirement a bit more. As we make plans for the remainder of the year- let's also commit to ensuring we are retirement ready. I promise you, it's not too early to start.
