ANOTHER CLEAN SWEEP FOR MOTTLEY
Prime Minister Mia Mottley has led her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to its third straight victory at the polls in Barbados.
Preliminary results show the BLP winning all 30 seats declared following the February 11 general election, called by the Prime Minister a year ahead of schedule.
Mottley herself comfortably won her St. Michael North East seat, while the leader of the main opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP), attorney-at-law Ralph Thorne, was the biggest casualty in the poll.
Thorne, who was previously elected on a BLP ticket but crossed the floor after the last election to become Opposition Leader, suffered a humiliating defeat -- this time around at the hands of the BLP’s Charles Griffith in the eastern riding of St John.
The St Michael North West seat was the final seat to be declared following a ding-dong battle which persisted up to 3AM Thursday between businessman Ryan Walters of the DLP and the BLP’s Neil Rowe.
Six political parties and several independent candidates also contested the race.
Mottley has declared a public holiday for Friday in celebration of her party's overwhelming victory -- it's third clean sweep in as many elections.
