Conference on the Archaeology of Gadara successfully concluded
Now that the conference on the archaeology of Gadara has come to an end, we can look back with gratitude on three days of intensive scientific exchange. The conference, jointly hosted by the Department of Antiquities and the GPIA Amman, opened on 2 February at the Department of Antiquities with welcoming remarks by HRH Princess Dana Firas and H.E. the Director General of the Department of Antiquities, Prof. Dr. Fawzi Abudanah.
Afterwards, GPIA Director Dr. Brita Jansen explained the background and objectives of the meeting: the occasion was the start of systematic archaeological work by the GPIA in close cooperation with the Department of Antiquities 50 years ago. As Prof. Thomas Weber habilitation thesis provided a summary of the state of research up to 2000, the conference was intended to provide an update on this. To this end, all institutions conducting research in Gadara came together for the first time to exchange scientific information. At the same time, an interested audience was present to learn about the latest research in Umm Qays.
After a detailed introduction by Thomas Weber-Karyotakis on the research conducted in Gadara from 1890 to 2002, the various institutes Department of Antiquities, German Archaeological Institute, Yarmouk University, Kokushikan University Tokyo and University of Kiel provided an overview of their research activities over the last two and a half decades.
One day later, researchers and guests gathered at the GPIA to listen to further presentations on individual monuments, objects, and material analyses.
On the third day, an excursion to Umm Qays gave the active participants the opportunity to explain and discuss monuments and objects directly on site. This once again contributed significantly to a comprehensive exchange of research results, and everyone was able to return to Amman with the feeling that they had learned a lot of new things that would help them to place their own research in a broader context.
A big thank you therefore goes to the 20 participants from five countries, to the Department of Antiquities for its consistently fruitful cooperation, and to all the staff at the Department of Antiquities and GPIA who ensured the smooth organization and pleasant atmosphere as well as the students from Jordan University who volunteered to support us.
اختتام أعمال الملتقى الدولي لآثار جدارا
مع اختتام ملتقى آثار جدارا نستذكر بامتنان ثلاثة أيام من التبادل العلمي المكثف. وقد عُقد المؤتمر بتنظيمٍ مشترك بين دائرة الآثار العامة والمعهد الألماني البروتستانتي للآثار في عمّان، وافتُتح في الثاني من شباط في مقر دائرة الآثار بكلمات ترحيبية لصاحبة السمو الملكي الأميرة دانا فراس، ولعطوفة مدير عام دائرة الآثار العامة الأستاذ الدكتور فوزي أبو دنة.
أوضحت مديرة المعهد الدكتورة بريتا يانسن أن المناسبة تمثّل مرور خمسين عاماً على بدء العمل الأثري المنهجي المشترك بين المعهد ودائرة الآثار في جدارا. ونظراً لأن أطروحة التأهيل العلمي للأستاذ توماس فيبر-كاريوتاكيس قدّمت خلاصة حالة البحث حتى عام 2000، فقد هدف المؤتمر إلى عرض أحدث المستجدات؛ حيث اجتمعت لأول مرة جميع الجهات العاملة في جدارا لتبادل النتائج العلمية، بحضور جمهور مهتم للاطلاع على أحدث أبحاث أم قيس.
بعد مقدمة تفصيلية عن تاريخ الأبحاث في جدارا من عام 1890 حتى 2002، قدّمت المؤسسات المختلفة – دائرة الآثار العامة، المعهد الألماني للآثار، جامعة اليرموك، جامعة كوكوشيكان في طوكيو، وجامعة كيل – عرضاً لأعمالها خلال الخمسة والعشرين عاماً الماضية.
وفي اليوم التالي استضاف المعهد الألماني البروتستانتي للآثار جلسات علمية إضافية تناولت مباني ولقى وتحاليل مادية متخصصة. أما في اليوم الثالث فقد نُظّمت زيارة ميدانية إلى أم قيس، أُتيحت خلالها للمشاركين مناقشة المعالم والقطع الأثرية في موقعها مباشرة، مما أسهم في تعميق تبادل نتائج البحث ووضعها في سياق أشمل.
نتوجّه بجزيل الشكر إلى المشاركين العشرين من خمس دول، وإلى دائرة الآثار العامة على تعاونها المثمر، وإلى كوادر الدائرة والمعهد والطلبة المتطوعين من الجامعة الأردنية على حسن التنظيم والأجواء العلمية المميزة.
