Last week, we successfully completed this year’s excavation season at the Amman Citadel. The GPIA is participating as a cooperation partner in the ammap project, led by Prof. Katharina Schmidt and Prof. Zeidan Kafafi.
As part of a sub-project, the defensive walls on the easternmost edge of the citadel were investigated; these date from at least the Iron Age through to the Umayyad period. Through intensive analysis, it has now been possible to identify various phases of alterations, extensions and reinforcements. As explained by Dr. Brita Jansen, within the walls, the focus was on excavating the corner of a Hellenistic building whose purpose remains unknown.
We would like to thank the Department of Antiquities and all the staff for their wonderful cooperation over the past weeks. We would also like to thank everyone who contributed to the successful completion of this work, especially our visitors, the excavation team, the workers, and all those whose support and dedication made this excavation season possible.
اختتمنا الأسبوع الماضي بنجاح موسم التنقيبات لهذا العام في جبل القلعة. ويشارك المعهد الألماني البروتستانتي للآثار (GPIA) كشريك تعاون في مشروعammap ، بقيادة د. كاثرينا شميدت و د. زيدان كفافي.
وفي اطار أحد المشاريع الفرعية، جرى البحث في الأسوار الدفاعية الواقعة على أقصى الحافة الشرقية لجبل القلعة، والتي يعود تاريخها إلى الفترة الممتدة من العصر الحديدي على الأقل وحتى العصر الأموي. ومن خلال التحليل المكثف، أصبح من الممكن الآن تحديد مراحل مختلفة من التعديلات والتوسعات والتدعيمات التي شهدتها هذه الأسوار. وكما أوضحت د.بريتا يانزن، فقد ركزت أعمال التنقيب داخل الأسوار على الكشف عن زاوية مبنى هلنستي لا يزال الغرض من استخدامه غير واضح.
