☀️ What if solar power systems could adapt to their surroundings?
That's the idea behind FLAPTrack from Technische Universität Graz (TU Graz)!
FLAPTrack combines foldable photovoltaic modules with solar-tracking technology. Developed by Armin Buchroithner and Thomas Neubauer at TU Graz's Institute of Electrical Measurement and Sensor Systems, it is among the latest renewable energy innovations emerging from Austria.
The system is designed to increase energy yields while helping protect installations from challenging weather conditions.
What makes FLAPTrack different:
• The system follows the sun throughout the day, allowing it to produce more electricity than fixed PV systems. On average, it generates nearly 40% more power, with increases of up to 56% on some days.
• If storms or heavy rain are expected, the modules automatically fold into a safe horizontal position. A built-in hail protection net also helps prevent weather damage.
• The patented foldable design makes the system easier to transport and set up. This makes it a good solution for temporary, off-grid, and remote locations.
🌻Even sunflowers may now have some competition when it comes to following the sun.
Ongoing tests are helping researchers improve the system's performance, durability and lightweight design.
The next step is to determine whether higher energy yields can also deliver long-term economic benefits.
