A luminous veil of colour. A phenomenon captured in liquid pigment.

Paul Jenkins’ celebrated ”Phenomena” series occupies a singular space in postwar abstraction. Working with fluid paint, he poured and guided colour across the canvas—allowing gravity, chance, and intention to converge. And this work embodies that alchemy. Translucent washes layer and merge, creating depth without weight. Light seems to emanate from within.

Jenkins believed each ”Phenomena” was a unique visual event—not a depiction, but an emergence. Colour becoming form. Material becoming presence.

This work is a representative piece of Toshimitsu Imai from his Art Informel period, where powerful brushstrokes and dense textures intertwine to create a strong sense of dynamism.

Imai fuses Western abstraction with Eastern sensibility. His work balances controlled structure with instinctive improvisation—each stroke materializing emotion and energy through thick, expressive layers of oil paint.

It captures how postwar Japanese artists in Paris blended Eastern and Western thought with abstract expression to forge a dynamic vision of modern art.
