Yesterday, Harald and Katarina, the current interns at Obei Business Center, hold a presentation about the differences in the Anime and Gaming industry between Germany and Japan.
The event at SUiTO started in front of seven interested guests at 7 pm with the introduction of the topic. After the half-an-hour-long presentation that covered the four parts: video games, eSports, anime, and manga in both Germany and Japan, the guests and the presenters discussed questions regarding the topic. As two guests even came from Korea and Thailand respectively, we also got an inside view of how the situation is in other countries. Especially the questions why Germany does censor the broadcasted anime so severely and what would need to happen to make eSports successful in Japan were eagerly discussed. According to some guests’ opinions, the latter needed a change in the current Japanese gambling law. This could happen someday as there are plans to open a casino in Japan (which is not allowed at the moment) that would require a change in the law, too. Regarding the heavy censorship in Germany, there does not seem to be much one can do, since the reason behind this is that Germans think anime are made for children. So they censor them to make them suitable for children. Here a change in the minds needs to happen first.
As the time ran by rather quickly, some attendants continued the conversation in a near-by restaurant.

When German people ask for a souvenir to bring to Japan for friends, they are often told to bring ‘Haribo’. The German gummy candies seem to be fairly popular in other countries. Now that I have visited Japan myself, I noted that Haribo is also sold here but either for really high prices or in really small packages. In Germany, the average package contains 200g and is sold for about 0.95 €. If you are able to find this size in Japan, they are likely to cost more than 350 Yen (about 3 €). Another difference is the variety in flavours. In Japan I could only found 5 – 8 flavours in total, whereas in Germany the range is a lot greater with more than 100 different released articles until today.

Some hundred years ago, ‘Baumkuchen’ was a very popular cake in Germany, but today there are only few confectioners left that produce this sweet. In Japan, on the contrary, Baumkuchen can be found in nearly every supermarket or convenience store. It was the German confectioner Karl Joseph Wilhelm Juchheim who brought this special pastry to Japan. Although the recipe was slightly adjusted to fit the Japanese taste, it still uses the German name. And as the Japanese are always more eager to try out new things, there are flavours today that the Germans could not even think of like green tea, mango or pumpkin.

Recently, especially German cleaning materials are getting more and more popular among Japanese clients. In particular, eco-friendly products like ‘Frosch’ are commonly used and sold in many Japanese supermarkets. These can even (in contrast to Germany) be purchased as gift sets and be given as a present. Furthermore, Werner & Mertz GmbH (the company that produces Frosch) cooperates with the Japanese Asahi Kasei Corporation and has released some products especially designed for the Japanese market.

Thanks to everyone for an excellent turnout at the Start-up Café on Saturday for the “Entrepreneurship and Economy in Portland” event. Gerry Blaise with Obei Business Center talked about Portland culture and economy, showed a video about successful startups, then gave some things that Fukuoka can learn from Portland's success. Special thanks to Michael Rogol and his team from Shift Energy Japan, who presented great information about the future of energy for Kyushu, and the great resources that Fukuoka offers for new businesses. Afterwards there was a productive exercise and discussion to generate ideas about finding funding, creating relationships and maximizing the resources Fukuoka has available now. Please stay tuned for out next informative event!
