Our book has finally been published!
Thinking about Migration: A Textbook for University and Graduate Students.
Edited/Written by Saeko Noda
Written by Hiroki Ishimaru, Sumire Kanda, and Hinako Eba
Hitonomori, 2026
It has taken three years from the initial conception of the book to its publication.
Along the way, we witnessed the pendulum of migration policy swing back and forth, particularly during elections. And at the very end, there was one final challenge waiting for us: a technical battle with KDP.
We sincerely hope that this book will be used by younger generations, especially university and graduate students, as well as by university faculty members who engage with them directly in the classroom.
This book was developed as a textbook to provide university and graduate students with the fundamental perspectives they need to think about and live in an increasingly diverse Japanese society—one shaped by population decline and a growing number of foreign residents.
Across 17 chapters, the book explores a wide range of topics, including foreign workers and the labor market, conditions in migrant-sending countries, increasingly globalized workplaces, migrant labor and human rights, migration policy, multicultural coexistence, international cooperation, and technology. Drawing on insights from development studies, sociology, economics and business, law, and related fields, it takes an interdisciplinary approach.
Each chapter includes familiar real-life cases, key concepts, exercises and discussion questions, as well as recommended readings and references. The book is designed to be easily incorporated into classes using discussions, role-playing activities, and other participatory methods. While we have placed particular emphasis on making the content accessible to students without prior specialist knowledge, we also hope that it will serve as a starting point for more advanced study.
Rather than viewing migrants simply as “labor” or “human resources,” we hope this book will encourage readers to think about what it means to build a society in which people live together as individuals, local residents, neighbors, and family members.
The book does not offer a single “correct” answer. Instead, our hope is that it will provide readers with facts and diverse perspectives that enable them to think for themselves, engage in dialogue, and consider what kind of society they want to create.
