Looking like a structure from a Japanese folk tale, Takasugi-an is a small tea house resting high on two chestnut tree trunks. Terunobu Fujimori designed and completed this unique project in 2004 in Chino, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The building mixes natural plaster and copper plates for a warm, rough texture, requiring visitors to climb wooden ladders, making the journey a central part of the experience.

THIS ELEPHANT IS ACTUALLY A DRAINPIPE.

On the former Leidsch Dagblad newspaper building in Leiden, the rainwater collector was shaped like an abstract elephant’s head. Water enters at the top and travels down the façade through its long metal trunk.

The building was designed in 1916 by Dutch architect Willem Marinus Dudok, with J.J.P. Oud overseeing its construction. Its richly detailed exterior also includes crowing roosters, journalist figures, geometric brickwork and stained-glass symbols representing news, advertising and criticism.

Completed in 1917, the former newspaper headquarters is now protected as a Dutch national monument.

A look at Yamato International by Hiroshi Hara. Found in Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan and completed in 1986. The metallic facade features stacked, fragmented geometries that break down the massive volume into a varied, multi-level landscape.

Deep in Arizona, USA, an experimental community took shape under heavy concrete vaults. Paolo Soleri began building Arcosanti in 1970 as a hands-on laboratory for urban design. This raw workspace, sheltered by sweeping, textured arches with an intricate tubular ceiling detail, is filled with the iconic wind bells cast on-site to help fund the ongoing construction.

Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927, during the early years of his collaboration with Lilly Reich. Its graceful tubular steel frame eliminated the rear legs, creating the illusion of a floating seat while expressing the clarity and precision that became synonymous with modern architecture.
