On the first day of the year Akihito, the emperor of Japan, abdicates, I was able to admire divinely beautiful sunrise.

Emperor Akihito has served the era as a symbol of the state. I never understood the meaning of symbolic emperor before learning his sincere attitude toward any places devastated by the war and disasters.

Akihito is in silence but his integrity shows the way Japanese go. That’s what the symbol does.

I believe God awards the Heisei emperor with the most beautiful sunrise.

There are so many superb and kind sommeliers in Kobe and Mr. Kondo of Kondo-tei is definitely one of them. Go North from Sannomiya station up to Kitanozaka and turn right at the first light and find his two restaurants. Kondo tei is on the right side of the road, at the second floor in the brick building and his bistro, Quiche-ya is on the left. When you open the double door of his Quiche-ya Kondo tei, firstly, you will be impressed with his warm smile. You can visit Quiche-ya as bar as well. Stable quality at reasonable price wine is provided by a glass, which, unfortunately still is not often expected in Japan. Mrs. Kondo is also there, who is a qualified cheese professional. I love to go Quiche-ya just to enjoy good wine and cheese.

There are so many varieties with Quiche, their primary product. I like orthodox “Quiche de Lorraine” as well as their new “Sukiya-Quiche” in which Kobe beef is used and sweet as Sukiyaki. If you are thrilled with Kobe beef, they also have Kobe Gyu-to(beef in Japanese) pie.

There is a very nice Tempura restaurant in Kobe, Sannomiya, which is located in the south of Kokusai Kaikan.
You can enjoy not only authentic Tempura but inventive ones of contemporary style including a cuisine with Kobe beef.
As a finish-up, you also can have real Soba noodle.
Their wine offering is also great!
It is amazing that Louis Jadot Burgundy costs only 3,800 yen for example.

Go west on Route 2. There is a beautiful driveway along the coasts from SUMA to AKASHI. JR and Sanyo line also run along the road. At a few kilometers past Maiko, you will find a few small but stylish restaurants and/or bars. Nocean is one of them.

From the counter seats, which face Setonai kai(Seto Inland Sea), the gorgeous Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is seen. It is worth just sitting here watching the sea of a variety of blues and the landmark bridge.

They let me see the wine cellar and I picked up a Rhone, Chinon 2003, aged gracefully. Usually this kind of bars, in most of the cases, don’t have an appropriate selection of wine.
Appropriate here means reasonable but one in good conditions, not left without care.
But Nocean has good one and that makes me really happy. Most of their possessing are organic.

Their dished are also good. Not extremely superb but professional. Want to go once in several months.

Akashi, a suburb of Kobe is nationally famous for its seafood, which prestigious restaurants in Kyoto eager to use. The city has also its own soul food, called Akashi-yaki. It is said to be the origin of Takoyaki.
So soft and delicious round balls made from eggs, flour and Japanese soup stock with dice-size-chopped octopus in it. Surly you cannot stop.

This is a view from my apartment in Tarumi ward, very west end of Kobe. I chose the place because of this view. You can see Awaji island and the Pearl bridge,the longest biridge in the world. Splendid, isn't it?
