園長は5月10日の園のブログで、動物のにおいへの対策を求める声が「意見箱」に寄せられていることを紹介。まず「不潔な環境で飼育していることによって臭うのであれば、それは良くないことです」と断った上で、「清潔にしていても残るある程度の体臭などは、やむを得ないものです」と理解を求めた。

That was the question posed to the head zookeeper of Hirakawa Zoo in Kagoshima. His response garnered remarks and comments of praise from around Japan.
On May 10th, the comment regarding smell was submitted to the suggestion box on the zoo’s blog. To which the head zookeeper began by stating that if the smell was due to poor sanitary conditions, that was a problem. However, he went on to say that if the comment was about the smell of the zoo and animals even under sanitary conditions, that is an unavoidable aspect of the zoo, and asked for understanding.
He continued by illustrating ways that animals use smell to convey information. He gave examples of the rhinoceros’ excellent olfactory perception and lesser pandas rubbing their buttocks on things to mark their territory, demonstrated that despite both being herbivores there is a difference in smell between giraffes and zebras, and so on.
Today people can view animals at their leisure, on television, and online. But the head zookeeper said that some things just cannot be appreciated through simple visual observation. Things such as smell.
He stated that being able to smell the animals in addition to seeing them, is part of the charm of a zoo. Rather than being put off by the smell, he suggested that visitors engage all of their senses, and try to imagine themselves in the position of the animals in an effort to more fully understand them.
