An application for registration of Sicilian Rouge HIGH GABA varieties has been announced and is now subject to provisional protection in Japan.

The contents of the announcement are as follows.

✅Type: tomato
✅Product Name: Sicilian Rouge High GABA
✅Variety registration name: SR87-17
✅Registration number: 35409
✅Restrictions: Yes (Prohibited to take overseas)

The variety registration system is one of the intellectual property rights for those who have newly cultivated plant varieties for the purpose of promoting the breeding of new plant varieties and contributing to the development of agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

This is a system that grants "breeders' rights" for a certain period of time.

The act of using seedlings of registered varieties as a business (proliferation, transfer, import / export, etc.) without the permission of the grower is prohibited and may be subject to compensation for damages and criminal penalties.

All registered varieties are posted on the variety registration website of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Please note that this product is prohibited to be taken out of Japan and can't be exported to or used in foreign countries.

"Last September, Tokyo-based Sanatech Seed began selling Sicilian Rouge HIGH GABA tomatoes, which had been developed using gene editing to contain large amounts of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to consumers. According to the company, the oral intake of GABA can help support lower blood pressure. The genome-edited fruit was approved by Japan's regulators in December 2020, after which the company sent free seedling CRISPR-edited tomato plants to about 4,200 home gardeners in May 2021."
