Last Week, Avesta Group had the privilege of attending the pre-opening days of the 61st Venice Art Biennale

These were three wonderfully busy days of exhibitions, encounters and conversations with curators, artists, partners and friends from across the cultural field.

Among the pavilions we especially loved was the Japanese Pavilion, conceived by Ei Arakawa-Nash with curators Lisa Horikawa and Mizuki Takahashi, « Grass Babies, Moon Babies ».

We were also particularly impressed by the Nordic Countries Pavilion and its exhibition « How Many Angels Can Dance on the Head of a Pin? », curated by Anna Mustonen. Drawing on Nordic folklore, the artists transform the pavilion into a mythical landscape.

We are proud to announce the publication of “Legends from the Land of Saudi Arabia”, a project for the Research Commission of the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia.

Legends from the Land of Saudi Arabia gathers the legends of the Kingdom into two editions: a 200-page illustrated coffee table book and a children’s edition, each published in Arabic and English.

Special thanks to Saudi illustrator Bayan Yasien (.beno), who brought to life the visual world of the legends, Abdullah and Ruba for their research work, and Dr Muhammad Al-Luwish and Dr Elizabeth Tucker for their precious expertise and support.

A genuine team effort, and a project we’re honoured to have contributed to.

Earlier this year, we visited the Nezu Museum in Tokyo — a peaceful oasis where architecture, nature, and art come together in perfect harmony. 🍃

Designed by Kengo Kuma and reopened in 2009, the museum is home to over 7,400 works of Japanese and East Asian art, including seven National Treasures. But what moved us most was how seamlessly the building and garden flow into one another, creating a sense of stillness and reflection.

From bamboo-lined paths to galleries that open onto the lush garden, every element is thoughtfully placed — a quiet retreat from the city’s pace.

🌸 A seasonal highlight: the iconic Irises by Ogata Kōrin, displayed each spring alongside the blooming irises in the garden. A stunning moment where art and nature mirror one another.

A true example of how space can shape cultural experience — and how museums can invite us not only to observe, but to feel.

As we celebrate today the creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, let’s present the Al-Masmak Fort, an Avesta Group project. ⁣
⁣
This ancient clay and mud citadel influenced by traditional Najd defensive architecture is a repository of the cultural landscape of the historic Riyadh. The Fort witnessed a pivotal moment for the history of the Kingdom: the Battle of Riyadh, which set the trajectory towards unification and building of the nation. The Fort proposes a journey into the past to rediscover the origins and evolution of the Kingdom.⁣

Working as close to the field as possible is one of our core missions. Our teams spent last week in the magnificent region of AlUla, a place of extraordinary heritage and breathtaking beauty. For millennia, AlUla's history has spoken to us through its cultural and natural heritage such as the Nabataean city of Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or AlUla's Old Town, a historic stopping point for pilgrims since 1100 CE.

“One of the projects in which I have participated with our team of experts is the Tashkent Centre of Islamic Civilizations in Uzbekistan. We put at the heart of this project the focus on the positive achievements of Muslim thinkers, artists and scholars that spotlight the humanist essence of Islam.⁣

Our fundamental principle at Avesta is to immerse ourselves in the culture and universe of each country that hosts every new project. For this reason, I travelled to Uzbekistan in 2019 to get to know its richness and worked side by side with experts and researchers to equip the museum with a unique concept and vision. Thus, we studied the rich scientifical, cultural and spiritual heritage of the Uzbek people, and worked on recognising their contributions to the development of Islamic civilizations in a unique exhibition, to preserve this legacy for future generations.”⁣

One of the earliest pieces of evidence of how knowledge can be conveyed from one culture to another is the magnificent illustration of the Arabic version of De materia medica by the 13th century Greek physician, pharmacist and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides. It depicts the Symphytum petraum, a red-flowered plant with Arabic indications of its medical use. ⁣⁣
