ミッドタウン・ガーデンを流れる小川から水が消える。代わりに流れてくるのは、せせらぎと共に聞こえる「水」を語る人の声。飲む水、洗う水、食べ物を育てる水、日用品を作る水――私たちの生活に巡る様々な水について、少し立ち止まって考えてみる時です。空っぽになった川底に点在する「水たまり」オブジェそれぞれの鏡面には、水にまつわる問いが書かれています。鏡に映り込むご自身の姿と周りの環境にその問いを重ねた時、どんな思いがよぎるでしょうか。水についての考えや疑問を人々がお互いに共有することで、人と水の繋がりに対する気づきが、未来に向けて波紋を広げます。
日本は、水資源に恵まれた世界有数の「水が豊かな国」です。一方、輸入品にはその生産過程で多くの水が使われており、それを通じて他国の水を大量に消費することから、日本は「水依存の国」であるとも言えます。日本に暮らす私たちがこの矛盾を日々の生活で意識することは少なく、世界で喫緊の問題として語られる「水不足」をどこか他人事と捉えていないでしょうか。
持続可能な未来に向けて私たちが取り組まなければならない問題は、複雑かつ巨大で、システムのあり方そのものを見つめ直すことが求められます。シンプルな一つの解決策は存在せず、さまざまな人々が問題に想いをめぐらせ、ともに取り組む必要があります。私たちがクリティカル・デザインの実践として形づくったこの作品と空間が、人々が水について考えを深め、未来のためにアクションを起こすきっかけになることを祈っています。

Water disappears from the stream flowing through Midtown Garden, yet the murmur of the stream remains together with voices of people talking about water – water to drink, to clean, to grow our food, and to produce our household goods. With its unexpected absence, we are invited to think about water and the way it permeates through our daily lives. What comes to mind? By sharing our thoughts and questions, the connections we make between people and water start to ripple out, reshaping our future.
Japan is one of the world's leading "water-rich" countries, blessed with abundant water resources. On the other hand, many imported products consume a significant amount of water during their production processes, which can lead to Japan being considered a "water-dependent" country as it indirectly consumes a substantial amount of water from other nations. It's possible that we, as residents of Japan, don't often recognize this contradiction in our daily lives and may not view the "water scarcity" issue, which is urgently discussed worldwide, as something that directly concerns us.
The issues we must address for a sustainable future are complex and vast, requiring a reevaluation of the very structure of our systems. There is no single simple solution, and various individuals need to contemplate the issue and work together. We hope that this work and space we have created as a practice of critical design will encourage people to think more deeply about water and inspire them to take action for the future.
