Umajiyama Iromono – vintage Kyoto finishing stone
Colorful (Iromono) natural finishing stone from Umajiyama, mined from the Tomae layer over 50 years ago. Like many historic Kyoto quarries, Umajiyama is now closed, and this piece comes from a private Japanese collection.
Soft and very approachable in use, it develops fine slurry effortlessly and offers excellent cutting performance. Compared with Hakka stones, the feedback feels slightly tighter and more focused while still remaining smooth and controlled.
The surface shows beautiful pink and beige tones — a distinctive look typical of colorful Kyoto natural stones.
Fast water uptake, silky slurry, and a sharpening feel that almost seems to draw the blade into the stone make it especially enjoyable for kitchen knives and traditional woodworking tools.
A side crack is present and has been professionally stabilized with a thicker protective sealant to improve durability and long-term usability.

Medium-soft in feel (≈ Lv. 3.5), it absorbs water quickly and develops a fine, silky slurry almost immediately, delivering a smooth and effortless sharpening experience.
Rather than chasing a bright mirror finish, this stone excels at producing an elegant kasumi with gentle luster and beautiful contrast between jigane and hagane.
Balanced and easy to use, it offers a great combination of cutting speed and finishing ability, making it especially enjoyable on kitchen knives and refined kasumi work.
Not a flashy stone — just an honest, dependable Kyoto awasedo whose qualities reveal themselves more and more through use.

Aiiwatani Karasu – Kyoto finishing stone
Beautiful Aiiwatani Karasu from Kyoto, showing distinctive black Karasu patterns across both the surface and sides — a classic feature of this quarry.
Medium in hardness but exceptionally dense and compact, with slow water absorption and a very composed sharpening feel. Once working, it quickly develops a fine slurry that refines the edge with impressive uniformity.
The cutting action is balanced and controlled: efficient without becoming aggressive, making it easy to achieve clean, refined edges.

Suitable for:
• straight razors
• Japanese planes and chisels
• high-end kitchen knives

Produces an elegant and consistent finish with a smooth, quiet sharpening experience.
Due to the limited flat area underneath, it is best used on a damp towel or mounted to a wooden base for stability.
A straightforward and honest finishing stone focused on performance rather than appearance.

Nakayama Akapin – rare koppa
Akapin stones have become increasingly difficult to find, making this small koppa a particularly attractive and uncommon piece.
Relatively soft in feel, it quickly develops the silky slurry that makes Eastern Kyoto stones (Higashimono) so appreciated. The slurry breaks down beautifully during use, becoming progressively finer and allowing multiple layers of delicate kasumi to build naturally.
The result is a finish with excellent depth, soft transitions, and refined visual complexity.
This stone strikes a wonderful balance between cutting speed and finishing quality, enhancing contrast between jigane and hagane while producing a soft, elegant kasumi.
A very enjoyable stone to use and a great opportunity to experience the distinctive feel and finishing character of a rare Nakayama Akapin.
