【Story】　How did DS Audio actually begin?

I have written it down for the first time, in my own words. Not a company history — the day I first heard a record through a 40-year-old Toshiba optical cartridge, the first prototype soldered onto a headshell, an equalizer built in a wooden box, and the faint sound we could only hear with the amplifier turned all the way up.

The photos and video were shot on my phone at the time. Out of focus, shaky, and exactly as they were.

DS Audioはどう始まったのか。初めて自分の言葉で書きました。40年前の東芝の光電式カートリッジで初めてレコードを聴いた日、ヘッドシェルにはんだ付けした最初の試作、木箱に組んだイコライザー。当時スマートフォンで撮った写真と動画を、そのまま載せています。

Short Film: “Let’s go back to analog”

We cannot put digital down. It is there before sleep, on the train, throughout the working day. That is simply the condition of modern life, and there is little use in resenting it.

But precisely because of that.

At the end of the day, the screen is placed face down on the table. Beans are ground. Water is left to boil. A record is drawn from its inner sleeve and held by the edges. It is set on the platter, and the stylus is lowered.

Those few minutes have come to matter far more than they once did.

It is because we are surrounded that the time away stands out. It is because everything else is efficient that a deliberate sequence of steps becomes a luxury. Analog is not a lost past. It is the pause our present days require.

It runs approximately fifty seconds. We hope you enjoy it.

このたびDS Audioは、短編ムービー「Let’s go back to analog」を公開いたしました。

デジタルを手放すことはできません。眠る前も、電車の中も、仕事中も、私たちは画面とともにあります。それは日常の前提であって、否定すべきものではないのだと思います。

けれど、だからこそ。

一日の終わりに、その画面をテーブルに伏せる。豆を挽く。湯が沸くのを待つ。内袋からレコードを取り出し、盤面に指紋をつけないよう縁を持つ。ターンテーブルに置き、針を降ろす。

その数分間が、以前よりずっと大きな意味を持つようになりました。

囲まれているからこそ、離れる時間が際立つ。効率の外側にある手順が、かえって贅沢になる。アナログとは、失われた過去ではなく、いまの日常にこそ必要な「間」なのだと思います。

How do you prove that a cleaning brush actually works?

For the SC-001, development began by building the measurement itself.

Fine dust on a record surface is buried in reflected light, and what cannot be seen cannot be counted. We suppressed the reflections with a polarizing filter, brought the dust alone into view under a microscope camera, and calculated it as area through image analysis. Only then could we begin selecting the bristle material.

This may come as a surprise: changing the bristle material alone changes the dust removal rate dramatically. Materials that feel almost identical in the hand ranged from removing only twenty-odd percent to removing more than eighty. The size of that gap surprised us more than anyone.

The finished SC-001 showed an average dust removal rate of 84%, across roughly 1,000 data points.
