Looking back on the majestic Mount Vernon, inarguably one of the most famous houses in America, ahead of July 4th. The large dining room in the north wing of the house was completed in 1787, both richly decorated and grandly scaled the room is painted a striking shade of green, a favored and expensive color in the eighteenth century. This bold choice lends contrast to the delicate and stylized plaster ornamentation with agricultural and allegorical motifs including tools, oak leaves, olive branches, and grapevines. You can read more about this room and others in Thomas Jayne's book "The Finest Rooms in America."
