Kyoji is a collective of Japanese makers. From highly skilled traditional craftsmanship to industria What do we need that hadn’t been produced yet?

From highly skilled traditional craftsmanship to industrial manufacturing approaches, we seek to re-define the new standards of “Made-in-Japan”. In a world filled with material things, perhaps it is the immaterial qualities that governs what, why and how we consume. What are our roles as Japanese makers in the pursuit to create the vision of a circular economy? Kyoji is neither a store, nor a coll

ection of goods. We are a collective of Japanese makers, pulled together with a common set of values - to create a new vision of our world, a world beyond the material. This is our mission. To change the way we make. Kyoji「矜持」is a Japanese term which refers to the phrase “to carry with pride and self-respect, in a humble manner”. While we seek to ignite change, we hope to hold on to the core values which brings us together.

Beautiful blue bamboo.
At Take Kobo Sotakuan, artisan Takehiko Sagawa even harvests the bamboo himself.

Tradition says it is best to cut bamboo under the dark moon, a practice that has been passed down through generations.
In this way, bamboo has always gently accompanied and supported people’s lives.

The Beauty of Utility — "KIRIBAKO" Paulownia Wood Box

When humidity rises, paulownia wood expands to seal itself tightly and block moisture from entering. When the air is dry, it contracts and gently releases its own moisture—keeping the inside at a steady level.

With its natural insect-repelling properties, paulownia has been used since ancient times as a trusted material for storage and preservation.

As kyoji's first collection for ma_do, "fragments" are carefully curated objects that have been given new life as art pieces.
A play on the Japanese word for window, the geometric, stainless steel frames are designed to be a platform for showcasing special objects inside your home – transforming your wall into a portal to another world.

Marunaka, the producer in Kiryu, has a stock of various textiles, including prototypes, that it has handled up to now. This time, Marunaka has made a fragments of experimental textile using hologram material.

日本のものづくりのエッセンスを、気軽にインテリアとして飾れるma_do。
このセットでは、丸中のホログラム素材を使用した実験的なテキスタイルをfragmentとしてma_doに飾ることができます。

有数の織物産地、桐生のメーカーである丸中は、これまでにさまざまなテキスタイルに挑戦し、幅を広げてきました。
見る角度によって煌めきを放つ生地は、丸中のこれまでとこれからの挑戦の積み重ねを感じさせます。

Since ancient times, the color red has been believed to ward off evil.
During outbreaks of smallpox, people prayed to red Daruma dolls for protection from illness.

Kiryu is one of Japan's leading textile production areas.

All around the city, you’ll spot old sawtooth-roofed factories — a special kind of architecture that became popular from the Meiji era (late 1800s) through the Showa period. These factories were designed with large north-facing windows to let in soft, consistent light, which is perfect for delicate weaving work and checking colors.

What’s amazing is that over 200 of these buildings still remain in Kiryu today. Many are still in use or have been beautifully repurposed, helping to preserve the unique industrial landscape and spirit of the city.

ノコギリ屋根工場は、明治から昭和にかけて多く建設されました。
斜面側に大きな窓を設けて、明るさがほぼ一定の北側の光を採光でき、
細かな作業や色味の確認のなどが必要な織物の産地と相性の良い建築です。

桐生では200棟以上のノコギリ屋根の建物が今なお残っており
その多くが現役稼働あるいは再活用され保存され、その景観をつくっています。

ma_do brings the essence of Japanese craftsmanship into your space.

From Hakoyoshi Kiribako-ten, a traditional kiribako (paulownia box) maker founded in 1868, comes this sculptural piece made from offcuts of kiri wood.

Wound within the wooden frame is Sanadahimo, a tightly woven flat cord known for its strength and durability.
It doesn’t stretch, making it perfect for securing valuable items — a material historically used together with kiribako.

An object that embodies “yo no bi” — the beauty found in everyday utility.

日本のものづくりのエッセンスを、気軽にインテリアとして飾れるma_do。

明治元年(1868年)創業の箱義桐箱店からは、桐箱の端材を使ったオブジェクトを。

桐の枠の中で巻かれているのは「真田紐」。
真田紐は、幅が狭くて厚みがあり、非常に丈夫な平紐です。伸縮しづらく、物をしっかり固定するのに最適な紐として、長く桐箱とともに使われてきました。

その吸放湿性などから物を保存する容器として使われてきた桐箱と、物を固定する真田紐。ただの容器や包装の役割だけでなく十分な機能があり、またその機能だけでなく道具としての美しさがある。
まさに用の美を感じられるオブジェクトです。

印伝の要となる漆の「硬化」

印伝では漆付けをおこなった後、温度・湿度管理のできる室に鹿革を入れて数日間かけて漆を硬化させます。

漆内の水分が蒸発しているようなイメージがありますが、実際は化学反応による「硬化」が起こっています。
ラッカーゼという酵素の働きにより化学反応を起こし、漆の主成分であるウルシオールが膜を作って固まっているのです。

ma_doの中に飾られる印伝の柄は、印伝の山本オリジナルの寄せ小紋。
伝統的な伊勢型紙を用いたとても細かく繊細な柄も、室でしっかりと硬化させることで一つひとつの柄が特有の光沢をもって鹿革に定着してします。

日本のものづくりのエッセンスを、気軽にインテリアとして飾れるma_do。

カトラリーは日常的に使うものではありますが、
その作られ方に意識を向けることは多くないのではないでしょうか。

立体的なカトラリーも、最初は一枚のステンレス板から。
型を使って無駄なくカトラリーの形を打ち抜く、地抜きという工程が
カトラリーが完成するまでの大きな最初の一歩となります。

抜かれた後の板は、まるでそれが
ひとつのアートのように美しく整っており、
職人の技術が光ります。

そんなものづくりの工程を感じられる逸品です。
