We discussed and learned so much from them- about water quality, humidity, tools, and the subtle differences of washi paper.
The quiet, creative days filled with sounds of calving wood and printing on paper are coming to an end.

A wonderful exchange with the Conservation team at Cambridge University Library last month.
We discussed the crucial role of Japanese paper in conservation and the craftsmanship behind traditional papermaking.
We look forward to continuing to build bridges between papermakers and conservators around the world.



先月、ケンブリッジ大学図書館の保存修復チームの皆さまを訪問し、素晴らしい交流の機会をいただきました。
保存修復における日本の和紙の重要な役割や、伝統的な紙づくりの技術について現在の状況を伝え、意見を交わすことができました。
これからも、和紙職人の方々と世界中の保存修復に携わる方々をつないでいくことを楽しみにしています。

We had the privilege of being invited to the Embassy of Japan in the Vatican and meeting Ambassador Chiba and his wife. It was an incredible opportunity to discuss the rich cultural heritage of washi paper and our recent activities.

For decades, we've been dedicated to exporting handcrafted washi to Europe, North America, and beyond. We remain dedicated to promoting traditional craftsmanship and supporting artisans who bring this heritage to life.

L'11 febbraio, l'Ambasciatore Chiba e la sua consorte hanno invitato i coniugi Moriki, rappresentanti di Moriki Paper, azienda specializzata nell'esportazione di carta washi, presso la Residenza.
La carta washi, che è anche un Patrimonio Culturale UNESCO, è una carta alcalina e resistente, ed è utilizzata per il restauro di beni culturali. I coniugi Moriki hanno recentemente visitato le principali biblioteche e musei del mondo, inclusa la Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana e i Musei Vaticani, per presentare la carta washi. Durante l'incontro, si è discusso riguardo alle recenti attività dei coniugi Moriki e l'ambiente internazionale che circonda la carta washi.

2月11日、千葉大使夫妻は、和紙専門の輸出会社、森木ペーパーの森木代表ご夫妻を公邸にお招きしました。
　世界文化遺産でもある和紙は、中性紙でありまた丈夫であることから、文化財の修復に使用されています。バチカン図書館やバチカン美術館をはじめ、世界中の主要な美術館や修復研究所を訪問し、和紙を紹介する森木ご夫妻の最近の活動や、和紙をとりまく国際的な環境等について、さまざまな意見交換を行いました。

On 11 February, Ambassador Chiba and his wife invited Mr. and Mrs. Moriki, representatives of the company Moriki Paper, specialized in the export of washi paper, to the Residence.
Washi paper, which is also a UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is an alkaline-resistant paper and is used for the restoration of cultural heritage. Mr. and Mrs. Moriki recently visited the world's major libraries and museums, including the Vatican Apostolic Library and the Vatican Museums, to present washi paper. During the meeting, there was discussion regarding the recent activities of Mr. and Mrs. Moriki and the international environment surrounding washi paper.

Celebrating 10 Years of Washi as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

On December 1, 2024, a special ceremony was held at the historic Nijo-jo Castle in Kyoto to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation of “Washi: Craftsmanship of traditional Japanese handmade paper”.

Representatives from 3 washi-producing regions—"Sekishu Banshi" (Shimane), "Honmino-shi" (Gifu), and "Hosokawa-shi" (Saitama)—delivered pledges to renew their commitment to preserving and passing on the technique of traditional hand-papermaking.

Following the ceremony, Takao Moriki gave a commemorative speech titled "The Global Value of Washi". He highlighted the international significance of washi as a traditional craft and explored its potential as a vital local industry. He also addressed the attendees, including artisans and local government officials, offering insights and proposals to ensure that washi and its producing regions thrive in the global market 5 to 10 years from now.

The event also featured a public demonstration of hand-papermaking by skilled artisans from the 3 regions. Visitors were captivated by their mastery, as they rhythmically moved bamboo screens through water infused with kozo fibers, showcasing the beauty and precision of this time-honored technique.

This celebration was a meaningful opportunity to share the wonders and enduring value of washi with a global audience, fostering greater appreciation for Japan’s cultural heritage.





和紙ユネスコ登録10周年記念式典

2024年12月1日、京都の世界遺産・二条城にて、ユネスコ無形文化遺産「和紙：日本の手漉和紙技術」登録10周年を記念した式典が開催されました。

石州半紙（島根県）、本美濃紙（岐阜県）、細川紙（埼玉県）の3産地の代表者がそれぞれ誓いの言葉を述べ、伝統技術の継承に向けた決意を新たにされました。

続く記念講演では、弊社代表・森木貴男が「世界から見た和紙の価値とは」というテーマで登壇し、和紙が持つ国際的な意義や役割、地域産業としての可能性を語り、職人や地元の自治体関係者ほか出席者全員に、グローバル市場での競争の中、和紙と和紙産地が5年後10年後残り続けるための提言を行いました。

また、一般公開イベントとして、3産地の職人が手すき和紙の実演を披露。
すだれをリズミカルに揺らしながら紙をすく技術に、訪れた観光客や関係者から感嘆の声が上がる場面も。
このイベントは、日本の伝統技術の魅力を国内外へ発信する貴重な機会となりました。

工芸青花20号の見返しに、30年前に先代の丹下哲夫氏が漉いた備中和紙(岡山県産三椏紙 楊梅皮染め)をお使い頂きました。

『工芸青花』の新刊20号を紹介しています。17号から、見返しに手漉きの和紙をもちいています。和紙問屋の森木さんと相談して、毎号産地をかえています（石州、土佐、小川、今号は備中和紙）。

〈紙造りの技法は古く銅の産出で縁のあった奈良から伝わったというが、次第に機械漉きに押され、近隣世帯が煙草栽培へと移るなかで、紙造りを続けたのが丹下家であった。哲夫氏は養父から「中折だけを誠実に造っておれば間違いない」と厳命され、原料を栽培し、糊や簀、天然染料を研究し、ダム建設でやむなく移住後も、倉敷民藝館の外村吉之介や心ある知己に支えられ、技を磨いた〉（若菜晃子「備中和紙」より／『工芸青花』20号）

取材、解説は毎号、若菜さんにお願いしています。『工芸批評』という本のなかで、高木崇雄さん（工藝風向）は「工芸」と「自然」をあまりに安直にむすびつける昨今（昔も?）の動向を批判しつつ、柳宗悦の言葉〈和紙を見つめる者は、自然の深さを見つめている〉を引き、工芸における自然と人為の非対称性──和紙をつくる主体はむしろ自然であり、人は〈助産師〉的存在であること──を説いています。用紙という、本来的に均一性を志向する手工芸のなかに、きびしく、管理しがたい本来的自然がそこなわれずある、という逆説に、毎号、思いをはせることになります。

Presentation at the 36th CIHA International Congress on Art History, Lyon, France

From June 23rd to 28th, 2024, Takao Moriki, our company representative, presented a paper titled "Issues Regarding the Global Accessibility of Japanese Paper Today" at the 36th CIHA held in Lyon, France. This year's theme was "Matter Materiality."

The presentation highlighted the widespread distribution of Japanese paper, which is indispensable not only as a support for artworks but also in the conservation and restoration of cultural properties worldwide. We addressed the persistent issues of quality in Japanese paper, touching on both traditional methods praised by conservators and the cost-effective production methods developed to meet modern diverse needs. As an active participant in the distribution network, we also made proposals for the future.

The Q&A session sparked lively discussions on the sustainability and concerns over the decreasing availability of domestic raw materials for Japanese paper. We were honored to collaborate with experts from the British Museum and the Rijksmuseum, making the session exceptionally engaging for conservators worldwide.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms. Valentine Dubard from Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris, and Ms. Kawamura from Yamaryo Art Conservation Studio, Tokyo for their support in organizing the team and making our presentation successful.

第36回国際美術史学会での発表

2024年6月23日からフランス・リヨンで開催された第36回国際美術史学会（CIHA）にて、弊社代表が「Issues Regarding the Global Accessibility of Japanese Paper Today」というテーマで発表を行いました。今年のテーマは「Matter Materiality」。

現在、国際的に流通している様々な和紙の歴史的背景と品質の問題点を挙げ、その対策と提案を行いました。また、発表後の質疑応答では、和紙の持続可能性や国産原料の減少に対する懸念について、参加者の方々との活発な議論が交わされました。

今回の発表において、大英博物館の東洋絵画修復部門チームとアムステルダム国立美術館の専門家と協力できたことは非常に光栄であり、発表をご覧になった多くの保存修復家にとって大変有意義なセッションとなったと信じています。

今回のチーム編成にご尽力いただいたパリ装飾美術館のバレンティーヌ様、山領絵画修復工房の川村様に心から感謝いたします。

After six years of delicate and highly technical conversation work, Michelangelo’s “Epifania” is now on display at the British Museum’s exhibition “Michelangelo : the last decades” in London.
Created around 1550, “Epifania” joined the British Museum’s collection in 1985 and one of two surviving cartoons (full-scale preparatory drawings) by Michelangelo.
This conservation project utilized various types of Japanese paper, with handmade Japanese paper made from 100% Japanese Kozo used for backing.

6年の歳月をかけて修復作業を終えたミケランジェロの作品「エピファニア」が只今ロンドンの大英博物館で開催中の「ミケランジェロ : 最後の30年」展にて公開されています。
1550年頃に制作されたエピファニアは1985年に大英博物館のコレクションに加わり、現存するかートゥーン(壁画などの実物大の下絵)2作品のうちの1点と言われています。
今回の修復プロジェクトでは、様々な和紙が使用されています。特に作品の裏打ちには日本産楮100%の手漉き和紙をお使い頂いています。

⭐ Michelangelo makeover magic in progress…

Enjoy this behind-the-scenes glimpse of our conservation team hard at work on the ‘Epifania’ – a 2.3 metre preparatory drawing by Michelangelo ✍

Cartoons are full-scale drawings artists made in preparation for works of art, whether paintings, frescos or tapestries. Cumbersome, fragile and heavily used, they seldom survive.

Michelangelo must have made tens if not hundreds of cartoons during his career, even gifting some to his close friends, and yet this is the only complete example that survives from the Master’s own hand.

‘Epifania’ will be on display in – and for the first time since the 16th century, it will be reunited with the painting that was made from it!

英国ウインザー城内部にある、様々な王室のコレクションを修理する修復工房を訪問させていただきました。
ウインザー城は、イギリス王室の象徴であり王室の重要な行事や儀式が行われる場所として知られているほか、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチやラファエロの素画を始め貴重な書物や絵画、美術品、古文書、家具など、数々の宝物が保管されており、それらの保存と修復には多くの専門家、修復のスペシャリストが関わっています。私たちが長年輸出してきた和紙が、今なおこの貴重な品々の修復に使用されていることは、日本とイギリスの歴史的な結びつきを強く感じさせるものでした。その歴史的に価値の高い数々の遺産を保護し、次世代に伝えることは私たち全員の責務であると強く感じました。
関係者の皆様、貴重な機会をいただき、ありがとうございました。

Visited the restoration studio located inside Windsor Castle in England, where various royal collections are repaired.
Windsor Castle is a symbol of the British royal family and is known as a place where important royal events and ceremonies are held. The conservation and restoration of these treasures is the work of many specialists and restoration specialists. The fact that Japanese paper, which we have exported for many years, is still being used to restore these precious objects was a strong reminder of the historical ties between Japan and England. I strongly felt that it is the responsibility of all of us to protect this heritage with its many historical values and to pass it on to the next generation.
Thank you to everyone involved for this valuable opportunity.

今年も残り１日となりました。新たな年を迎える準備は如何でしょうか？

今年１年は本当に感謝の年でした。私共の長年のパートナーであるカナダの The Japanese Paper Place （"JPP") が今年創業40周年を迎え、在トロント日本国総領事館の領事、カナダ国内、アメリカ、ベルギーからも販売パートナー、アーティストを含む多くの方々が参加された11月のイベントには、私達も島根県の石州和紙の西田さんと共にお祝いに駆け付けました。

会場では、世界中のあらゆる分野で技術革新が進むこの世の中で、1400年以上に渡り日本各地で今なおこれほどの様々な和紙が作られていること、またそれを今カナダで身近に手に入れられること、自分達アーティストが作品に使うことが出来ることの有難さを伝えるために、多くの方々が私達に声を掛けてくれました。

今回改めてそのようなお声をユーザーさんから直接聞かせていただき、私共としてもとても嬉しく、和紙がこれだけ多くの人々の心を動かしている凄さを感じた瞬間でした。40年という年月を掛けて、日本から遠く離れたカナダで和紙の普及に尽力してくれているパートナー JPP はもちろん、いつも安定した品質の素晴らしい和紙を作って頂いている全国の和紙職人さんや工場の方々にも、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになりました。私たちは多くの方々に支えられて今があります。本当にありがとうございます。

皆様良いお年をお迎えください。

We only have one day left this year. How are you preparing for a new year?

2022 was truly a year of gratitude for us. In November, our long-time partner, The Japanese Paper Place ("JPP") in Canada, celebrated its 40th anniversary with an event that was attended by the Consulate General of Japan in Toronto, as well as many people from Canada, the U.S., and Belgium, including their resellers and artists. We were also there to celebrate with Mr. Nish*ta of Sekishu Washi, from Shimane prefecture.

In this world where technology is advancing in all areas of the world, many people at the event have told us how wonderful the variety of washi is still being made in Japan over the past 1,400 years, and how fortunate they are to be able to obtain it there and use it in our own artwork.

It was a great pleasure for us to hear such comments directly from the users, and it was a moment for us to realize how much washi has touched the hearts of so many people. We are filled with gratitude not only to JPP, who has devoted 40 years to promoting washi, far away from Japan, but also to all our washi papermakers and mills in Japan who have always produced excellent washi of consistent quality. We are here today thanks to the support of many people. Thank you all very much!

2022年11月16日、国際交流基金トロント支部の
ホール会場にて、"Washi Roundtable: Exploring
the advantages and creative potentials of Japanese
handmade paper" （和紙座談会： 日本の手漉き
和紙の良さと創造の可能性を探る) というイベント
が開催され、雪の日にも拘わらず多くの方に
ご参加頂きました。

ナンシー・ジャコビ氏が日本の手漉き和紙の概要
を説明し、弊社代表の森木が北米に和紙が渡った
歴史と現在の手漉き和紙の現状等をプレゼンいたしました。
また、カナダで活躍する5名のアーティストによる作品発表と和紙に関するQ&Aセッションを行いました。

今回は島根県浜田市の石州和紙職人８代目西田勝
氏が現地入り。ゲストとして壇上に上がり、各
アーティストや会場の参加者から多くの質問を
受けました。皆さん、職人さんがどのような思いで
紙漉きを継いだのか、また日常生活についても
興味津々なようで、会場全体が終始和やかな雰囲気
で大盛況のうちに閉会となりました。

国際交流基金トロント日本文化センターの皆様及び
関係者の皆様には大変お世話になりありがとうござ
いました。

On 16 November 2022, the event "Washi Roundtable:
Exploring the advantages and creative potentials of
Japanese handmade paper" was held in the hall of
Japan Foundation Toronto Branch, and attended by
many people despite the snowy weather.

Nancy Jacobi, the founder of The Japanese Paper Place,
gave an overview of Japanese handmade washi and
Takao Moriki gave a presentation on the history of
washi exported to North America and the current state
and challenges of handmade washi industry.
Canada's leading Five artists presented their works as
well and a Q&A session on washi was held.

This time, 8th generation Sekishu Washi papermaker
Masaru Nish*ta from Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture
came all the way and was present. He took the stage
as a guest and received many questions from the artists
and audience participants.
There were such questions as his daily life and the
reason why he took over his father's business and
everyone seemed very interested.

The whole event was a great success, with a friendly
atmosphere from start to finish.

We would like to thank Japan Foundation Toronto and
all those involved for their kind support.
