Following our transition into post-press manufacturing in 1973, we decided the future was abroad.

In 1975, we established Horizon Co., Ltd. to strengthen our relationship with domestic customers (today you know this part of the company as Horizon Japan). Just a year later, in 1976, we constructed our Biwako Plant in Shiga Prefecture, scaling up our manufacturing capabilities for finishing and bindery equipment.

To prepare for international business, our founder Hachiro Hori sent his son, Eijiro Hori, to study business administration in California. Upon returning, Eijiro joined the company and founded Horizon International Inc. in 1981 to export our products worldwide.

At drupa 1982 Eijiro showed up to drupa with three machines and a suitcase.

“I did the demo and everything myself. Only three kinds of products were shown at the stand. Perfect binder BQ-220, Friction collator AC-16 and guillotine cutter PC-64. This introduction was very successful in getting in contact with many visitors. Some of them became our distributors and are still good business partners. I am grateful to have found such good partners.”

Building on this international momentum, we later established Horizon GmbH in Germany in 2004 creating a home base for EMEA sales and support.

Special Pt. 1: Turning Crisis into Innovation

Stepping into the future didn’t start for us in 2026, Horizon has been looking ahead since 1946. Our founder, Hachiro Hori, established Taiyō Denki Kenkyushō in Kyoto, specializing in the trial manufacturing and repair of electrical equipment.

By 1953, the business was reorganized as Taiyo Seiki Inc. and relocated to expand into the mass production of electrical measuring instruments used in schools. Over the next decade, we strengthened our manufacturing capabilities through OEM production for major precision machinery manufacturers, relocating to our current Kyoto Headquarters location in 1964.

Then came the 1970s oil crisis. As an OEM manufacturer, orders vanished overnight. To protect the company and employees, Hachiro made a defining choice: build an original brand.

That pivotal decision led to a game-changing breakthrough: in 1973, we developed the BB-S, the world’s first tabletop perfect binder. We soon expanded into paper folding machines, collators, and cutters.

With adversity at every turn, Hachiro pivoted many times to overcome and grow stronger, turning what could have been a crisis into some of his greatest innovations.

What began as a small radio repair shop in Kyoto, Japan, in 1946 has grown into a global leader in the print finishing industry, with over 700 employees and distribution partners in 120 countries.

Recently, our team in Japan gathered to celebrate this achievement, reflect on our roots with a presentation on founder Hachiro Hori by his son Eijiro Hori, and realign ourselves for the future.
