娘に頼まれて、洋服のお直しをした。

ややこしい仕様だったし、きれいに仕上げたかったので、社員さんにお願いしようかとも思ったけれど、やっぱり自分でやることにした。

誰かのことを思いながら手を動かす時間は、ただの作業じゃない。

ミシンがこんなに楽しいと感じたのは、久しぶりだった。

なんか、いい休日でした。

My daughter asked me to alter some clothes for her.

The construction was a bit tricky, and I wanted to finish it nicely, so I thought about asking one of our staff members to do it. But in the end, I decided to do it myself.

Working with my hands while thinking about someone is never just a task.

It had been a long time since sewing felt this fun.

Somehow, it turned out to be a good day off.

手仕事は、いつだって言葉より先に伝わる。

Technique goes beyond countries and language.

In an overseas workshop, we stand in front of fabric and paper patterns.
To be honest, words don’t always get through.

But then—

Fold here.
This part rises.
This area is under strain.
So, what if we tried it this way?

Hands move.
Eyes meet.
Someone nods.

And just like that, the conversation moves forward.

Handwork always speaks before words do.

折り紙アーティスト、D.Hinklayさん .hinklay の個展に伺いました。
プリーツの型紙折りは通常、折り線に線を引き、その線を頼りに折り上げていきます。
けれど、彼の作品では線を引かずに折っていくそうです。
線がないのに、形が立ち上がる。
目には見えない構造を、手と感覚で探りながら折っていく。
プリーツも折り紙も、平面から立体を生み出す仕事。
改めて、「折る」ということの奥深さを感じる時間でした。

I visited the solo exhibition of origami artist D. Hinklay.
When folding pleating moulds, we usually draw fold lines first, then fold along those lines.
But in his work, he folds without drawing any lines.
Forms rise up, even though there are no visible guides.
He folds while searching for an invisible structure through his hands and intuition.
Both pleating and origami are crafts that create three-dimensional forms from flat surfaces.
It was a time that reminded me once again of the depth and beauty of “folding.”

プリーツ加工とは、平らな一枚の布に折り目をつける技術。
でも、ただ折るだけではありません。
光の入り方。
影の出方。
動いたときの表情。
そのすべてが、折り目の中に刻まれていく。
これは、布に「立体」を記憶させる仕事です。

布が、ただの平面ではなくなる瞬間。
そこに、僕はプリーツのおもしろさを感じています。

Pleating is the technique of creating folds in a flat piece of fabric.
But it is not simply about folding.
The way light enters.
The way shadows appear.
The expression it takes on when it moves.
All of these are gradually carved into the folds.
This is the work of making fabric remember three-dimensional form.

The moment when fabric is no longer just a flat surface.
That is where I find the beauty and fascination of pleating.

昨日は、S.I.C縫製学校の第1期生のみなさんが生田プリーツへ工場見学に来てくれました。

現場を見てもらい、実際に紙を折ったり、ミシンに触れたりしながら、ものづくりの一部を体験してもらいました。

説明を聞くだけではなく、手を動かしてみることで見えてくることがあります。

布が形になるまでには、たくさんの段取りと工夫があり、機械だけではなく、人の目、手、感覚が欠かせません。

今回の見学や体験が、これからのみなさんの学びや仕事に少しでも役立てばうれしいです。

縫製士に光を。
そして、服づくりの現場にもっと誇りを。

来てくださった皆さん、ありがとうございました。

Yesterday, the first class of S.I.C Sewing School visited Ikuta Pleats for a factory tour.

They had a chance to see the actual workplace and experience part of the making process by folding paper and trying out sewing machines.

There are things you can only understand by moving your hands, not just by listening to explanations.

Before fabric takes shape, there are many steps, ideas, and adjustments involved. It is not only about machines, but also about human eyes, hands, and senses.

I hope this visit and experience will be useful in some way for their future learning and work.

Shine a light on sewing professionals.
And bring more pride to the world of garment making.

オーストラリアで100年続いたプリーツ工房。その歴史を積んだコンテナが届きました。入っていたのは美しい型紙や使い込まれた道具たち。そして、メルボルン最後のプリーツ職人サイモンさん の情熱。
あらためて思う。引き継ぐというのは残すことではなく、進化させること。
それが、託された者の使命。

A pleating workshop that continued for 100 years in Australia.A container carrying that history has arrived.

Inside were beautiful pattern templates and well-used tools.And the passion of Mr.Simon , the last pleating craftsman in Melbourne.

It makes me reflect once again:
To inherit is not simply to preserve, but to evolve.
That is the mission of the one entrusted with it.
