On October 15, 1987, Africa lost one of its most revolutionary and charismatic leaders — Captain Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso. Aged just 37, Sankara was gunned down in a coup d’état orchestrated by his former ally and close friend, Blaise Compaoré. His assassination sent shockwaves through Africa and the world, extinguishing a beacon of hope for genuine African self-determination, anti-corruption, and grassroots development.

Today, almost four decades later, Sankara's death is not just a historical fact. It remains a cautionary tale and a source of inspiration for Africans yearning for visionary leadership.

5 Lessons from Kenya’s Gen Z Demonstrations — Reflections from the BBC's Bloodshed Parliament
1. Youth Are No Longer Silent — They Are a Political Force
The documentary clearly shows that Kenya’s Gen Z is no longer willing to be a passive observer of politics. They are educated, connected, and deeply aware of their rights and the failures of their leaders. This generation refuses to inherit broken systems without demanding accountability and reform.

2. Decentralized, Leaderless Movements Are Powerful
Unlike traditional protests led by politicians or organized groups, the Gen Z demonstrations were largely decentralized. Through social media and peer networks, they mobilized thousands without clear figureheads — making it harder for authorities to suppress or co-opt the movement.

3. Brutality Strengthens, Not Weakens, Public Resolve
The violent response from security forces — as seen in the tragic scenes at Parliament — did not deter protesters; it fueled broader outrage both nationally and internationally. Bloodshed, intended to scare, instead exposed injustices and galvanized even greater support for change.

4. Technology and Global Visibility Are Game Changers
Real-time sharing of videos, livestreams, and digital storytelling by young Kenyans ensured that the world was watching. Platforms like X (Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram amplified their voices beyond national borders, attracting global media and humanitarian attention that pressured authorities to respond.

5. Structural Change Needs More Than Protests
While street protests shook the political establishment, the documentary subtly reminds us that sustainable change demands a broader strategy: civic education, policy engagement, participation in elections, and building alternative leadership. Demonstrations open the door; organized action keeps it open.
