𝑹𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒊𝒕 𝑽𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏
Your rabbit, like any other family pet, should be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian. Rabbit immunizations will protect them from the fatal and highly contagious calicivirus.
So, here are rabbit vaccination programmes you should follow.
𝙆𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙑𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙋𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙙
• First Vaccination - 4 weeks
• Second Vaccination - 8 weeks
• Third Vaccination - 12 weeks
• Fourth Vaccination - After every 6 months after the third vaccination
𝑨𝒅𝒖𝒍𝒕 𝑹𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒊𝒕 𝑽𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒅
• 1st Vaccine - 2 weeks after maturity
• 2nd Vaccine - 4 weeks
• 3rd Vaccine - Every 6 months after the 2nd vaccine
𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑹𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒊𝒕 𝑽𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕
Rabbits require immunizations to protect them from myxomatosis, Rabbit (Viral) Hemorrhagic Disease (R(V)HD), and a strain of R(V)HD known as R(V)HD2, both of which are fatal to rabbits and give them great suffering. Let's look at each one separately.
𝟏. 𝐌𝐲𝐱𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬
Myxomatosis is a virus spread by blood-sucking insects including fleas, mites, and mosquitoes that is common in wild rabbits in the United Kingdom. It can also be spread by sick rabbits coming into touch with each other, as well as contaminated objects or the environment, such as bedding, hutches, grass, feed bowls, carriers, clothing, and shoes.
𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬
Symptoms can emerge up to 14 days after the infection. Puffy swellings around the cheeks, ears, and/or eyes are early indications that can lead to blindness. Swellings in the a**s and/or ge****ls are also possible. This frequently develops into a high fever, making eating and drinking difficult. Myxomatosis can sometimes be more severe, resulting in numerous lumps.
𝟐. 𝐑(𝐕)𝐇𝐃 (𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭 (𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥) 𝐇𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞)
It is a viral hemorrhagic disease that affects rabbits.
Rabbit is a type of rabbit that lives in (Viral) Hemorrhagic Disease is common in wild rabbits in the United Kingdom. It causes a high fever, internal hemorrhage, and liver illness, and it's quite dangerous. Rabbits under the age of six weeks are not affected by the sickness, while older rabbits get severe symptoms. It spreads by rabbit-to-rabbit contact, infected objects or settings, and insects, just like myxomatosis. The disease, however, is virtually invariably fatal.
Pet rabbits with this disease are frequently found dead with blood-stained fluid in their mouths and noses, or there may be no obvious signs at all, with the cause of death being determined only after a post-mortem examination. Because there is no effective cure, immunization is required.
𝟑. 𝐑(𝐕)𝐇𝐃𝟐 (𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭 (𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥) 𝐇𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝟐)
R(V)HD2 was first discovered in France in 2010 and has been confirmed in the UK since 2013, with confirmed cases seen all throughout the country. Although R(V)HD2 has a lower mortality rate than R(V)HD, rapid death is often the only symptom.
It spreads in the same way that R(V)HD1 does, although it can afflict rabbits of all ages. There is no specific therapy for this infection, and while some rabbits can recover from it, it is often fatal. Vaccination is so necessary.
Vaccinate all your rabbits to prevent infections that can be fatal.
Unfortunately, because many diseases have no effective therapies, immunizations are necessary. You can get a variety of immunizations for your rabbits, including:
Vaccines that protect against myxomatosis and R(V)HD on a yearly basis are available. Rabbits can be vaccinated against this when they're five weeks old, however R(V)HD2 protection requires a different vaccination. This vaccine can be given to rabbits as young as 10 weeks old.
A yearly vaccination that protects against myxomatosis, R(V)HD1 and R(V)HD2 in one dose is available and can be given to children as young as five weeks old. If your rabbit has already been vaccinated against myxomatosis but not R(V)HD2, this new vaccination may not be appropriate.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞-𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞
Remember the following guidelines to keep your rabbit healthy and happy:
Boosters should be given on a regular basis throughout your rabbit's life; consult your veterinarian for more information.
Insect control may help to lower the risk of infection. Use insect-proof screens to keep flies and mosquitoes at bay. Ensure that your home and all pets are flea-free, as suggested by your veterinarian. Rabbits can be infected by fleas from cats and dogs.
Using a rabbit-safe disinfectant, clean and disinfect your bunnies' enclosure and any areas they access on a regular basis. Bedding and litter should be changed on a regular basis. Never use housing or bedding from any rabbits who may have been infected with these diseases.
Contact with infected domestic rabbits and any wild rabbits should be avoided. Allow your rabbits no access to any areas where they have previously been.

Our first rabbit breed is New Zealand. This rabbit originates from California, U.S.A. after rabbit farmers imported rabbits from New Zealand. Thus, leading to its name. This breed is famous for meat but also is good for fur.
Currently, there are four color types of the New Zealand rabbit. They include;
• White
• Black
• Broken
• Red
However, many farmers are conversant with the New Zealand White, suitable for commercial rabbit meat production. The New Zealand rabbit breed’s maturity weight is between 4 to 6 Kgs. This will give you much more income if you are a commercial rabbit farmer. Also, a female New Zealand rabbit can give birth to 1-14 kits at once.
𝟐. 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚
Also called California, White George West first bred it in California in 1920. George came about this breed by crossing a Himalayan and a Chinchilla. He then crossed the offspring of these two with a New Zealand White.
A California has pink eyes, a short neck, and is muscular. This breed is best for meat as it gains a maturity weight of between 4 to 5 kilograms. As a farmer, it will give you the best results as it gives birth to eight to twelve kits.
𝟑. 𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐆𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭
The Flemish Giant is a breed whose origin is Ghent, Belgium. Its name portrays its body structure as weighty and has long ears. Even though its first breed is from Belgium, current Flemish Giant breeds are from the United Kingdom.
This rabbit breed is available in different colors: white, sandy, fawn, steel gray, light gray, blue, and black. Additionally, it is best for meat, thus the best when you want or is venturing into cuniculture.
Flemish giants can reach a maximum weight of ten kilograms, but most range between 5-6 kilograms.

Mites live on your rabbit's skin, causing itching, discomfort, and a less-than-stellar appearance. Keeping your rabbits free of mites will help them feel and look their best!
Did you know that mites come in a variety of shapes and sizes? Mites are a separate species of little spider-like creatures with four pairs of legs, the smallest of which are less than 0.1mm long! Many mites are not parasites and can be quite beneficial, such as decomposers.
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬?
However, some mites, such as those that reside on our dogs, can be more troublesome. There are three types of parasitic mites that we could see on our rabbits:
𝐄𝐚𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬
Psoroptes cuniculi, or rabbit ear mite, is a frequent parasite of pet rabbits. Affected rabbits are frequently seen shaking their heads and scratching at their ears, and crusty debris as well as possibly painful ulceration may be visible within the ear.
Although ear mites are widespread, other illnesses in rabbits might give similar symptoms, thus ear mites should always be diagnosed by your veterinarian. If your ears are infested with ear mites, any necessary cleaning should be done by your veterinarian rather than at home, as it can be very painful.
Ear mites can be passed from bunny to bunny, so if you have numerous rabbits, they will almost certainly all need treatment.
𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚
Cheyletiella parasitovorax, popularly known as 'hair mites' or 'walking dandruff,' is the most common mite in rabbits. While most rabbits are unaffected by a Cheyletiella infection, they can get itchy if left untreated.
A cheyletiella infection usually manifests itself as a build-up of dandruff or scurfy skin on your rabbit's back, particularly between their shoulder blades. If your rabbit develops cheyletiella, it is critical that they receive a comprehensive health check in addition to therapy — rabbits with dental illness, obesity, arthritis, or spinal difficulties may have difficulty grooming, which can lead to mite problems.
𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬
Harvest Mites, sometimes known as 'chiggers,' are seasonal parasites that are most seen in the autumn, earning them the name Neotrombicula autumnalis. Harvest mites are found in rural locations, and rabbits with outdoor access may become infected. The larval stages are the ones that impact our pets, and they appear as little red or bright orange specks that cluster around the ears, head, feet, and belly.
Harvest mites appear to prefer rabbit ears because there are so many small places to hide, but they can be found anywhere.
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬?
Mites can be found all around the world, and rabbits can take them up through the environment, other rabbits, and other domestic pets like dogs. Infection can also be spread through bedding. While there is some seasonal variation — harvest mites, for example, are found in the autumn - mites are prevalent all year, and mite exposure cannot be totally avoided.
𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬
The symptoms of a mite infestation vary based on the type of mite, but there are a few indicators that mites could be a problem:
• Dandruff patches or dry skin
• Excessive grooming of any part of the body
• Hair loss in patches
• Shaking of the head
• Excessive ear wax/dried up ear canal
𝑾𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑨𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑹𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒔
Although rabbits can develop mites, healthy rabbits living in a clean environment are less likely to get them, and infections are usually light and treatable. As a result, rabbits rarely need to be treated for mites on a regular basis. There are, however, a few basic things you may do to help protect your rabbit against mites:
𝟏. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠.
Always have your rabbit evaluated by a vet if you notice any changes in their hair coat, skin, or behavior. A vet will be able to assist control any mite infestation. Due to the possibility of flystrike, all rabbits should get a complete checkup at least once a day, especially between spring and autumn.
𝟐. 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠.
Regular grooming, particularly for long-haired rabbits, can aid in the early detection of any changes in your rabbit's skin, allowing for more effective and rapid treatment.
𝟑. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐬
Because mites can be passed from one species to another, parasite protection for dogs and cats in the home is essential.
𝟒. 𝐁𝐞𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠.
Purchase your bedding from a reliable retailer. Some people propose freezing bedding for 24 hours before using it to kill mites, however this is impracticable in many circumstances because the bedding must not be frozen or damp.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬
Ivermectin and Revolution (selamectin) are the two most frequent drugs used to treat rabbit mites. Revolution is a topical treatment, while Ivermectin is an injectable. Both drugs require a veterinarian's prescription.

The history of rabbit domestication

Rabbits were domesticated for the first time in the fifth century. They were exclusively found in the Iberian Peninsula and in southern France at the time. Monks from southern France are thought to have been the first to domesticate the rabbit.
The explanation was more pragmatic in character. They deemed the animal's meat to be a type of fish, allowing them to eat it throughout Lent. The monks are also credited with being the first to choose and raise rabbits for different weight classes and coat colors.
The rabbit traveled from the Iberian Peninsula to other regions of the world as the Roman Empire expanded and trade between countries increased. It has the potential to expand quickly due to the abundance of food in the wild and its reproductive-joyfulness.
Reasons for Rabbit Domestication
There are many rabbits for sale but there were many reasons for rabbit domestication. They include;

1. As Meat

The Romans had already found the rabbit as a food source when they conquered Spain in the second century B.C. and were aware of the creatures. To ensure that rabbit meat was always available, the animals were housed in fenced-in enclosures (Leporarien) where they could reproduce freely.
Rabbits were developed to be bigger and fatter in the Middle Ages in order to provide more meat.
There were already many races with distinct strikes in the 16th century. The marriage of rabbit breeding began with the industrial development in the nineteenth century. People moved from the countryside to the cities, leaving no room for pigs, cows, or other livestock.
Aside from poultry, the rabbit was a reliable source of meat that could be raised in urban areas. During World Wars I and II, the British and Americans were tasked with breeding rabbits for meat and fur for themselves and their troops. Rabbits were commonly raised as livestock after the Second World War. In the meantime, in the private sector, the fur-nose has acquired a new significance.

2. Scientific Study

Rabbit breeding took on a new direction in the 16th century, moving away from meat provider rabbits. One princely court in Germany discovered his love for the dwarf rabbit and began breeding various rabbit varieties. Victorians began growing rabbits for competitions and exhibits in the nineteenth century.
The first rabbit breeding organizations were founded in Germany in 1874. Rabbit breeding became a popular hobby in Europe during the twentieth century. Breeders formed associations and proceeded to generate an increasing number of odd varieties with varying sizes, builds, coat colors, and weights.
