A 5-year old girl was r***d and murdered in Wanzalala village, Shinyalu constituency, Kakamega County, by a 15-year-old boy who was later lynched to death by an angry mob. 💔 Said the heartbroken mother, Annette Kasiti. Pole sana mum. Usipite bila kumwambia pole 😭

CORPORAL CAROLINE CHEMUTAI KANGOGO was a Kenyan police officer who went rogue in July 2021, sparking a high-profile nationwide manhunt after being linked to the cold-blooded murders of two men before allegedly taking her own life. Her tactical training as a certified sharp-shooter allowed her to evade sophisticated police dragnets for nearly two weeks, captivating the country in a real-life crime thriller.
Caroline Chemutai Kangogo was born on January 10, 1987, in Nyawa village, Tambach Division, within Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya.
She was the first-born child of Barnaba Kipkoech Korir (a retired police officer) and Leah Jepkosgei Kangogo. Her upbringing in a disciplined, policing household heavily influenced her career path.
She attended Nyawa Boarding Primary School and later graduated from St. Alphonsus Mutei Girls Secondary School in 2006.
In 2008, she enlisted at the Kenya Police College in Kiganjo. She distinguished herself by earning a First Class in Shooting Range Qualification, marking her as a certified sharpshooter.🎯

👮‍♀️CAREER RANK:

By 2014, she completed her Corporal Course. At the time of her rogue spree, she was a Corporal attached to the Nakuru Central Police Station, serving as a trusted court orderly.
The Public Image:
To her family, colleagues, and neighbours in the Kasarani Police Lines (Nakuru), Kangogo was initially seen as a humble, well-behaved, and professional officer who related smoothly with everyone.
Beneath her professional exterior, her personal life was highly volatile. She was married to Richard Kipkirui Ngeno, a senior Maritime Police Unit commissioner based in Mombasa, with whom she had two children. However, the marriage became estranged and bitter.
Media reports and police intelligence later revealed she lived a flashy, fast-paced nightlife in Nakuru. She frequently patronised clubs, allegedly rubbed shoulders with underworld figures, and was involved in multiple romantic entanglements with both colleagues and wealthy businessmen.

🥷 KANGOGO’S TARGETS

They were not random; they were men deeply embedded in her personal and financial life:
1. Police Constable John Ogweno (The "Love of Her Life") was a fellow police officer stationed with her in Nakuru. The Relationship: In her recovered communications and su***de notes, Kangogo openly referred to Ogweno as her lover. The Motive: Intense romantic jealousy and domestic disputes. Kangogo reportedly claimed Ogweno was treating her poorly or threatening her, driving her to an emotional breaking point.
2. Peter Ndwiga Njiru (The Financial Associate) was a 32-year-old businessman who ran a private security firm in Juja, Kiambu County.
A close associate whom she had met through social and business circles.
THE MOTIVE: Purely financial betrayal and revenge. According to her confessions, Ndwiga had allegedly swindled her out of Ksh 1.5 million in a business deal gone sour and refused to pay it back.

DEADLY TACTICS

Kangogo executed her crimes with cold, calculated precision, using her tactical background to catch her victims entirely off guard.
The Nakuru Ex*****on (July 5, 2021):
Inside the Kasarani Police Lines in Nakuru, Kangogo confronted John Ogweno inside his car. She shot him through the head at point-blank range, killing him instantly. She then raided his possession, stole his loaded Ceska pistol, and slipped past the guard gates undetected.
The Juja Lure (July 6, 2021):
Less than 24 hours later, she fled to Kiambu County. She phoned Peter Ndwiga and lured him to Hotel Damax in Kimbo, Juja, under the guise of settling their issues.
CCTV footage captured them booking Room 107 together. Once inside, she shot Ndwiga through the ear into his brain while he slept. She calmly locked the room, paid the hotel evening bill, told the receptionist she was going to buy toothpaste, and vanished into the night.

Knowing how police triangulate phone signals, she threw away her primary phone. She communicated sparingly using untraceable burner SIM cards and briefly switched on phones before immediately discarding them.
She completely avoided public transport or personal cars that could be flagged at highway checkpoints. Instead, she navigated urban areas via anonymous boda-boda (motorcycle) operators, slipping through Nairobi and western counties undetected.
She cleverly slipped into a bank branch in Juja to withdraw Ksh 40,000 in cash right before her face flooded national television, ensuring she could survive on cash without using traceable mobile money (M-Pesa) platforms.
She successfully traversed at least five counties (Nakuru, Kiambu, Nairobi, Kericho, and Elgeyo-Marakwet) while the country’s entire security apparatus was on high alert looking for her.

THE FINAL CHAPTER

On July 16, 2021, the manhunt came to a sudden, highly controversial halt.

Kangogo snuck undetected into her parents' homestead in Nyawa village early in the morning. Her mother went to check the outdoor bathroom and discovered Caroline sitting dead on the floor, slumped against the wall in a pool of blood.
Drafted on a phone messaging app, her su***de note expressed deep remorse for killing Ogweno ("the love of my life") but remained defiant about Ndwiga, stating he deserved it for stealing her money. She requested to be cremated in a white wedding gown to ease her parents' earthly troubles.

THE MURDER THEORY CONTROVERSY: Public and expert skepticism immediately erupted regarding the police's swift ruling of su***de.
Her legs were neatly crossed, her yellow hoodie was pulled neatly over her head, and the gun was resting awkwardly in her hand without the natural recoil displacement expected from a self-inflicted gunshot.
No visible blood spatter or brain matter was splattered on the concrete walls directly behind her head, a physical impossibility for a close-range Ceska pistol discharge.
Despite forensic autopsies later concluding that she died of a single gunshot wound matching a su***de trajectory, the public and security experts remain divided on whether she took her own life or was silenced by powerful accomplices before she could speak.

12/06/2026

The brutal double murder of 55-year-old Dutch billionaire Herman Rouwenhorst and his night guard, Evans Bokoro, in June 2021 remains one of the most chilling, highly calculated, and bizarre true-crime stories on the Kenyan Coast.
The Victim:
Herman Rouwenhorst was a wealthy businessman originally from Apeldoorn, Netherlands. Attracted by the booming coastal tourism sector, he immigrated to Kenya and built a vast financial empire. He owned several high-end nightclubs, entertainment joints, and massive real estate portfolios across Mombasa and Kilifi counties, including the luxurious Roco Apartments in Shanzu.

THE MASTERMIND:

Riziki Cherono Ali, his Kenyan partner/wife, enjoyed a high-end lifestyle funded entirely by Herman’s multi-million shilling empire.
The Co-Conspirators:
Mary Nekesa Ambani (Cherono’s former employee and trusted confidante) and Timothy Omondi Ngowe (alias Rashid, a 22-year-old local criminal contracted as the prime hitman).

THE BIGAMY TWIST:

The most astonishing element of the background surfaced during police investigations. Cherono did not just integrate herself into Herman's life; she had compromised the entire family. Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives discovered legal marriage and birth certificates proving that Cherono was legally married to William Rouwenhorst—Herman’s own brother.
She had managed to maintain concurrent relationships with both wealthy Dutch brothers. She bore a child with William while simultaneously siring two children with Herman, all while living lavishly off the family's coastal business fortunes.
The Motive: A Bitter Divorce Threat
By early 2021, the domestic bliss at Roco Apartments had completely shattered. According to testimonies from house helps and close associates, Herman had grown weary of the turbulent relationship and explicitly threatened to divorce Cherono
Because of the massive scale of his investments, a legal divorce would completely lock Cherono out of his estate and strip her of her luxurious lifestyle. Rather than walk away with nothing, Cherono decided that Herman was worth more to her dead than alive.

🏹THE EX*****ON

Cherono tasked Mary Nekesa Ambani with sourcing contract killers. Ambani recruited Timothy Omondi Ngowe.
Forensic evidence and confessions revealed that Cherono was incredibly persistent. The plot actually failed on two previous occasions, but she kept pushing the hitmen to finish the job.
Weeks before the hit, Cherono took Omondi on a reconnaissance mission into her own matrimonial home. She allowed him to take photographs of the master bedroom layout so the killers would know exactly where to strike.
In a tragic stroke of bad luck, Herman replaced his long-term security guard with 23-year-old Evans Bokoro on May 31, 2021. Bokoro had only worked for three uneventful nights. On his fourth night, he was slaughtered simply for being a witness in the wrong place at the wrong time.😭

THE FATEFUL NIGHT (JUNE 3–4, 2021):

Cherono left the apartment door unlocked and handed the entry keys to the hitmen. Omondi and his gang slipped past the gate, neutralized Bokoro, and entered the bedroom. They bound Herman's hands and legs tightly before inflicting catastrophic, suffocating head trauma.

THE STAGED ALIBI:

To throw off the police, the hitmen staged a "robbery gone wrong." They bound Cherono up in the living room. When police arrived the following morning, she wept bitterly, claiming that "foreign robbers" had broken in, tied her up, and brutally murdered her husband.

THE MANHUNT

The DCI's Homicide Unit immediately smelled a rat. Cherono's story of being spared by ruthless, bloodthirsty killers who left no signs of forced entry did not add up.
The killers made away with over KSh 3 million in cash from Herman’s safe and a RealMe C11 mobile phone belonging to the tycoon. Detectives tracked this phone. Though it originally used SIM cards belonging to Cherono and her daughter, the day after the murder, a new SIM card registered to a proxy name ("Mohamed Khalid") was inserted.

SUDDEN WEALTH:

The manhunt led straight to Timothy Omondi. Omondi, a broke local criminal, suddenly came into massive money right after the murder. He immediately went on a spending spree, purchasing construction materials and building a brand new four-room house in Kiembeni, Mombasa. DCI detectives recovered cash, receipts from construction stores, and the victim's phone during his arrest.
🚓 Within weeks, the DCI swooped in and arrested Cherono, Ambani, and Omondi.

ARRAIGNMENT, BETRAYAL

The trio was formally arraigned before the Mombasa High Court. Cherono pleaded "not guilty," aggressively trying to secure bail by claiming she needed to protect her inheritance from being stolen while she was behind bars.
However, the prosecution's case became airtight due to a massive betrayal within the conspiracy:
Mary Nekesa Ambani cracked under pressure. She took a plea bargain with the state, downgrading her charge to manslaughter. In exchange for a lighter sentence, she turned state witness and gave a devastating, blow-by-blow account of how Cherono funded, planned, and insisted on the murder.
In a heartbreaking twist, the state placed Herman and Cherono’s own biological children under witness protection. The children took the stand and testified directly against their mother, exposing the intense marital warfare and her suspicious behavior leading up to the night of the murder.
On June 8, 2026, Justice Wendy Micheni officially ruled that the prosecution—having presented 27 witnesses and overwhelming forensic data—had established a definitive prima facie case. Riziki Cherono and Timothy Omondi have been ordered to enter their full defense as the trial reaches its final, definitive stage.
