ELEVATION OF GILGIL AND MOLO TOWNS TO MUNICIPALITY STATUS

In order to attract investment and insitutionalize urban planning in our towns, the County Government of Nakuru is considering the upgrade of Gilgil and Molo to municipalities.

In a Nakuru County Cabinet meeting held on July 13, 2021 a report by the Department of Lands, Housing and Physical Planning on elevation of Gilgil and Molo towns to Municipality status was adopted.

This is a step towards making our towns safe, beautiful and competitive for investment as they will be classified and have legal status for urban management, policies and systems.

Under the Urban Areas and Cities Act, a town can be elevated to a municipality if it has a population of at least 50,000 residents. Gilgil and Molo have 185,209 and 156,732 people respectively as per the 2019 Kenya Population Census, hence meeting the criteria.

Upon elevation, Gilgil and Molo will become the third and fourth towns to be municipalities after Nakuru and Naivasha. Nakuru Municipality will soon be awarded charter for city status.

In line with this, I will soon appoint an Adhoc Committee to evaluate if the two urban areas meet the criteria set in law for conferment of Municipal status. If the Adhoc Committee finds that the municipal status requirements have been met, we will transmit the report to the County Assembly for its consideration.

Upon approval by the County Assembly, I shall award Municipal charters to the two towns.

As the lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus in India continues, pollution levels across much of the country have dropped sharply. Now some residents in northern India say they can see the snow-capped Himalayas 200 kilometres away for the first time in 30 years.
