I went today to check one day old broiler for my customers at kenchic. However, I enquired about layer chick and latest you can get is next year April ( 04/2023)

Also layer industry has also some other challenges like cost of feeding vs profit generated from sales of eggs.
Before you start getting eggs from 4.5 to 5.5 months i.e 300 birds can consume 200k
Topic for another day.

Let's focus on layers stage alone
The cost of feed ingredients is to high.
Right now the cost of one 70kg bag is 3800
That means 54kg per kilo
Let say that you have 300 birds
300* 135g per day = 40500g= 40.5kg of feeds* 54ksh = 2187
Cost of feeds = 2187 kes
Sales of eggs i.e let's assume 90% where most farmers are clocking 85%
That will be 90/100*300 birds =270 eggs
The current price of one tray is 410 farm gate near Nairobi and Kiambu price and 440 at wholesale price.
Other places farmers are getting 380 per tray

Let us use farm gate price at 410
That means I eggs = 410/30
Or 270 eggs will be 9 trays
Assuming laying % will be constant of which it can't be due to other factors.
Sales = 9*410= 3690
Cost was 2187
Profit will be =1503
Let assume the cost of transporting feeds, electricity, labour, water.
300 birds consume around 80litres of water per day.
I.e the profit is so much squeezed maybe the farmer may get 500 profit.

This week, we feature an image of ICIPE - International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology recently collected specimen, nameless, but formidable .

In 1951 J.R. Steffan described an collected in Senegal by the French entomologist J. Vuillet. Steffan considered the specimen different enough from other that he erected a new genus for it, ; Xyphorachidia dentata being the type species of the new genus. In his paper, Steffan did not provide an explanation for the name he chose for the genus (its etymology). Xypho (or Xipho) means “sword” in Greek, and rachis, in zoology, means “spine” or “shaft”. The feature to which the genus name refers is the long, pointed extension of the scutellum, looking much like a sword as the scientific name suggests. In most wasps the scutellum is more or less flush with the first part of the abdomen. In the case of Xyphorachidia the scutellum extends markedly over the basal segments of the abdomen. This feature is hard to miss, and it really does look much like a sword. So, a good choice of names, Mr. Steffan!

A few years ago icipe collected four specimens of a second species of the genus while sampling in a Kenyan coastal forest. This was great because not only was the species new, it extended the distribution of the genus trans-continentally; some 6000 kilometres from to ! Unfortunately, all the Kenyan specimens were males. Why unfortunately? The publication of a new species where both sexes are described together is much preferred because it will account for any sex-related differences within the species (sexual dimorphism is common in the insect world and differences between the sexes of the same species are sometimes extreme). It is not uncommon for a species to have been described twice from collections that included only one of the sexes. So, icipe set that project aside, hoping to collect the female. Which happened just a month ago. One of our technicians brought a specimen collected in another coastal forest and it was a female. Hoorah! Now hold on a minute. The specimen in the petri dish was a Xyphorachidia all right – but it was clearly a different species than both Steffan’s X. dentata and our other coastal forest species. We are patient and wait for the specimens that will complete our project on, not one but two new species. http://www.icipe.org/news/insect-week-14-august-2023
