To draw near to God, we must first submit to God, which means submitting to His Word; we must come broken before God in true humility because He’s near the brokenhearted; we can fast to see our utter dependence on Him for everything; we can minister to others since it’s really doing it for Christ; we can be praying at all times; and we must abide in Christ and in His Word because without Him we can do nothing. And nothing is not a little something.

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too (Philippians 2:3-4).

Responding to Christ’s love means that we lay down our own agenda and desires for his call upon our lives. As Jesus took the form of a servant in humility, so we are called to live humbly as his people and to think of others before we serve ourselves.

Isaiah 43:18-19
"Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert
and streams in the wasteland.”

Instead of dwelling on past hurts, we can let go of those memories and forgive the person that hurt us. Although we cannot make ourselves forget the memories, if we stop clinging to them the painful associations will fade significantly.

To draw nearer to God, you must be in more communication with Him, which begins and ends with prayer.
