RABAI MISSION: WHERE KENYA'S CHRISTIAN AND EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY BEGAN

Nestled in Rabai, Kilifi County, stands one of Kenya's most important historical landmarks—the Rabai Mission.
Founded in 1846 by German missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf under the Church Missionary Society (CMS), the mission was established after local Mijikenda elders granted land for its development.
Rabai is renowned for hosting St. Paul's Church, one of the oldest surviving church buildings in Kenya, completed in 1848. The mission also became home to one of the country's earliest formal schools, helping lay the foundation for modern education in Kenya.
Beyond religion, Krapf's work in linguistics contributed significantly to the development and documentation of written Swahili. The mission also played a role in anti-slavery efforts along the East African coast.
Today, the historic site is preserved as the Rabai Museum, where visitors can explore the origins of Christianity, education, and linguistic scholarship in Kenya.

Before Nairobi existed as a city, before Kenya became a colony, and before independence, Rabai had already become a center of learning, faith, and cultural exchange. Its story remains an important chapter in both Kilifi's and Kenya's history.
