Mekatilili was born in the 1860s at Mutsara wa Tsatsu in Bamba, Kilifi County. She was an only daughter in a family of five children. One of her brothers, Mwarandu, was taken by Arab slavers and was never seen again. She was married to Dyeka at Lango Baya.

Rebellion

Her motivation for resistance was led by economic and social-cultural. She wanted to prevent any Giriama labor to the British, in order to protect Giriamans from enslavement in a foreign land. Coach David Kenga
Is grateful for what the game of soccer has done for him.

“It has given me an opportunity to get a very good education, meet and connect with various players and families and make a difference in my community,” said Kenga, who hails from , Kenya.

He played college soccer at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, graduating in 2008 with a bachelor of science degree in biology with a double minor in chemistry and psychology.

Coach David Kenga, youth soccer coach and former professional player.

Fuhaha Youth Soccer Academy
Kenga created a foundation after graduating from Winthrop. “I went to Kenya to visit my family after my last year of collegiate soccer at Winthrop University,” he remembered. “I was saddened to see some of my childhood friends addicted to drugs and other socially unacceptable activities. These were players that were the top of the cream, and if they had an outlet to provide hope for the future, they would have taken a different positive route.”

The foundation, called Fuhaha Youth Soccer Academy, is based in Kilifi, Kenya. Its goal is to provide the sport of soccer as an outlet for youths to avoid having them involved in drugs, alcohol and other deviant behavior.

The foundation collects gently used soccer equipment that can be shipped either to Kenga’s address in the United States or to the foundation’s address in Kenya. Items are then spread to different teams in the Kilifi area and in the Upcountry of Kenya.

Both Winthrop men’s and women’s soccer programs have donated equipment. Kenga also has partnered with South Carolina United FC and the SCYSA ODP program for donations. The John Corey Stringfellow Foundation has sponsored the shipping of all the donated items every year.

Kenga is buoyed by the response, adding that his garage is usually full of stuff to send to Kenya. The biggest challenge he sees is that the foundation needs more options to ship the donations.

As for the future of his foundation, Kenga hope that it will continue to provide the necessary equipment and expertise for youths in his village and city to experience soccer, and that they also can benefit from one of the world’s great sports.
