M-taka joined Vihiga County, Kaimosi Friends University, and other stakeholders in commemorating World Environment Day 2026 at Kaimosi Friends University under the theme, "Rethinking the systems that power our economies and repairing our relationship with climate."

A key highlight was the launch of the County Information Services (CIS) Plan, the CECARE Strategic Plan (2025–2030), and new county climate governance committees, signalling a stronger commitment to coordinated climate action and sustainable development in Vihiga.

As counties strengthen climate planning, data will become increasingly important in informing policy, infrastructure investments, and service delivery. In the waste sector, this means digitizing operations, integrating informal and formal waste actors, and generating the evidence needed to improve environmental outcomes.

During the exhibition, M-taka showcased its technology and progress to date, including reaching 372 community members, training 29 waste actors, and onboarding 17 waste actors onto the Integrated Circularity Platform across Mbale, Majengo, and Luanda.

How can technology transform waste management and unlock opportunities within the circular economy?

During an insightful interview on Western Spectrum, Benson Abila, Co-founder and CEO of M-taka , shared how innovation and digital solutions are reshaping the waste management sector across Kenya.

The conversation highlighted the growing role of technology in improving waste collection, traceability, recycling, and financial inclusion for waste actors, while also advancing smart city initiatives through strategic partnerships with municipalities including Kisumu and Vihiga.

Beyond environmental sustainability, the discussion underscored the economic impact of circular economy solutions in creating dignified green jobs and expanding opportunities for youth and women.

A powerful reminder from the conversation:
“Your waste is your responsibility.”

As M-taka continues to scale its impact across counties and beyond borders, the focus remains on building cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable communities through innovation, collaboration, and inclusive growth.

Kisumu took a bold step toward a greener future and we were proud to be part of it.

At Moi Stadium, stakeholders gathered for a tree planting exercise under the 2021 gazetted greening initiative aimed at advancing a cleaner and more sustainable city. The ceremony featured remarks from the City Manager, Mr. Abala Wanga; Jalaram Academy’s principal, Mr. Ravi Singh; a representative from St. Joseph Catholic Milimani Church; as well as partner organizations. Speakers emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in environmental protection, calling for stronger collaboration between institutions, communities, and individuals to drive sustainable change.

For us, the event was more than just planting trees; it reinforced our mission. M-taka hosted a team of young leaders from Muungano Wa Wanavijiji (SDI Kenya) from Mathare informal settlement, Nairobi, at the Maendeleo Recovery Facility in Kisumu as part of a learning exchange on innovative waste management models.

The visit provided an opportunity to share practical insights on technology integration, material recovery operations, value addition, and business models that are helping strengthen circular economy systems and improve livelihoods within the waste sector.

Through the engagement, the team was also able to explore the value of innovation in anchoring the success of informal sector recovery models such as community-based buyback centres, and how technology and data can help waste actors better manage their businesses, improve access to markets and credit, and strengthen the growth and sustainability of their ventures.

We are grateful for the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences, and we look forward to continued collaboration in advancing sustainable and community-driven waste management solutions.

M-taka recently paid a courtesy visit to the Mombasa County Government Department of Environment and Solid Waste Management, where we engaged with the Directors of Administration, Waste Management, Fleet Management, and the Chief Sustainability Officer to explore opportunities for collaboration in strengthening sustainable waste systems in the county.

We also had the opportunity to meet Michelle from and tour the county’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF), operationalized by Midella. The visit gave us first-hand insights into how waste is handled across the value chain—from collection and picking to sorting and preparation for recycling.

As M-taka continues scaling in Kenya, these engagements in Mombasa are critical in understanding the local ecosystem, identifying collaboration opportunities, and building partnerships that can accelerate a more inclusive and data-driven circular economy.

We explored how technology and data can be leveraged to improve operational efficiency, strengthen traceability, and support evidence-based policy and decision-making within the sector. The conversations also reinforced the growing need for digital infrastructure that connects waste actors, improves visibility across the value chain, and supports more sustainable livelihoods.

We’re excited about the momentum in Mombasa and look forward to working together to strengthen waste management systems through innovation, collaboration, and community-driven solutions.
