Consumer Units or CUs as they are commonly referred to by many people. They have gained popularity in modern households as they provide the best solution to properly wire your house, control your gadgets and ensure safety and protection of your house. A normal CU will consist of one main Double or Tripple Pole switch and several circuit breakers or what we call MCBs.
Power comes in to the Main Switch aka Double Pole and then the power is distributed to different areas of the house based on the required load and rating as indicated on the MCB. From the MCB the cables then get routed to the various outlets.
The double Pole is usually rated at 100A but there are some at 63A. All these are based on design and preference of the qualified electrician in charge of your wiring. The power is then routed to the outlets for example lighting outlets can be assigned to a 6A or less, sockets at 16A or more, cooker and water heaters at 32A and so on.
By using a CU you are guaranteed that in the event of a fault along any of the lines, only the affected category will be switched off saving you the inconvenience of going dark to troubleshoot the problem.
