Why are Hospital Boards struggling in their Fiduciary Responsibility to Govern and Oversight Safety and Quality-of-Care in their organizations?

Unfortunately, the senior executives are seemingly not making it easier for their boards either.

In most cases, the governing units will be shown dashboards 📈📊 which they struggle to make sense of:

1⃣ Swamped with technical data terminologies which breeds confusion and intimidates the non-healthcare directors📑.

2⃣ Inadequate time-slot on the board agenda for discussions on the Patient Safety and Quality of Care data maze.

3⃣ Limited information shared - senior executives shy away from transparency especially when results are sub-optimal.

4⃣ Data shared on the board dashboards are mostly limited to regulatory obligations with NO specifics on the Organization's own priorities📋.

📍 It is the responsibility of the Board Chair and Secretary to ensure that its board is adequately resourced to Govern and Oversight Safety and Quality.

📌 Join our Bringing Boards on Board Series to develop your Board's capabilities to effectively Govern for Safety and Quality.

As the world marks this year's , there is no better reminder that I have come across than . What , (and by extension the who are similarly ), is and to find .

"Furthermore, calling nurses heroes can obscure systemic failures, including inadequate staffing, poor working conditions, and insufficient protective equipment. When we call nurses heroes, we risk complacency, accepting that they will somehow manage despite these adversities. This perspective detracts from the pressing need to improve the healthcare system to ensure it serves both patients and medical staff effectively" - Jose Arnold Tariga, PhD.

We must remind the duty bearers here; that for health care to continually give , and to those it cares for, the Workforce itself must feel , and , these being essentials for the Health Workforce to find .

The preconditions for requires that every health system has to provide:

1. The balance, be it in absolute numbers and the right skill mix.

2. be it the reduction of emotional strain often seen in the form of; disrespect, unfair remuneration, learning by humiliation or workplace bullying to enable harm reduction both for patients and the workforce itself.

3. The necessary resources to anchor , even though resources might be scarce in most set-ups, we must as a matter of urgency eliminate the difficult working environment that the Health Workforce being called are expected to contend with.

Only then, can we walk the and assure ourselves of and in the process of delivery.

For my Country Kenya, there is no better time to rally the The Ministry of Health, Kenya, stakeholders and the development partners to create .

What does the ongoing Industrial Action by Healthcare Professionals in the country mean for our UHCJourney?

Well, I look at it through the Lenses of the Triple and Quadruple Aims of Healthcare. How then do we Build Resilient Workspaces that deliver;

1. Better Care Experience for Patients
2. Improved Population Health, and
3. Lower per Capita Cost of Health care?

Here's my take on the current Healthcare crisis:
