Your Child Is Finishing Form Four. What Comes Next?

One day, you are buying school shoes.

The next, you are looking at your child and wondering:

“Wait… what happens after this?”

The uniform that once looked too big now barely fits. The books are being packed away. The final examinations are almost over.

And suddenly, the child you have spent years preparing for school is standing at the doorway of a much bigger world.

For many parents, this is where the anxiety begins.

University or TVET?
Which course?
Will they get a job?
What if they don't qualify for their first choice?
Should they start a business?
What skills should they learn?

And sometimes, in our fear, we rush to answer these questions for them.

But perhaps the most important conversation after Form Four isn't:

“Which course are you going to take?”

It is:

“Who are you becoming, and what possibilities do you want to explore?”

Your child's KCSE result will matter. Their course will matter. Their institution will matter.

But none of these should become the entire definition of their future.

This is the time to help them discover their strengths, interests, values and abilities.

To explore university, TVET, professional training, entrepreneurship, apprenticeships and emerging skills.

To meet people who are already working in careers they are considering.

To ask questions.

To research.

To make informed decisions.

And, perhaps most importantly, to understand that there can be more than one route to a meaningful life and career.

As parents, we don't have to have every answer.

Sometimes our greatest role is simply to sit beside them and say:

“Let's figure this out together.”

Because your child is not just finishing Form Four.

They are standing at the beginning of their next chapter.

And the question is no longer only “What did they score?”

It is:

“What possibilities can we help them see?”

Does your organisation have these 7 policies?

For NGOs, CBOs and CSOs, policies are not just documents to keep in a folder until a donor asks for them.

They provide a shared framework for how your organisation makes decisions, manages resources, treats people and handles risk.

Here are 7 policy areas worth reviewing:

1️⃣ Finance Policy - How money is budgeted, approved, spent, recorded and reported.

2️⃣ Procurement Policy - How goods and services are sourced fairly, transparently and consistently.

3️⃣ Human Resource Policy - How your organisation manages recruitment, roles, performance, leave, conduct and staff welfare.

4️⃣ Safeguarding Policy - How you protect children, vulnerable people, beneficiaries, staff and other people your organisation interacts with.

5️⃣ Conflict of Interest Policy - How potential conflicts are disclosed, assessed and managed.

6️⃣ Anti-Fraud & Anti-Corruption Policy - How your organisation prevents, identifies and responds to fraud, corruption and misuse of resources.

7️⃣ Data Protection & Privacy Policy - How you collect, use, store, share and protect personal information.

But having seven documents is not the goal.

The real question is: Are these policies understood, approved, implemented and regularly reviewed?

A policy that sits unread in a folder does little for organisational accountability.

Where is your organisation going, and how does the proposed project fit into your broader priorities?

3️⃣ Governance & Key Policies
Do you have documented governance structures, roles, financial procedures, procurement processes and other relevant policies?

4️⃣ Financial Records & Budget
Can you demonstrate how your organisation manages money and present a realistic, properly supported project budget?

5️⃣ Project Proposal & Evidence of Impact
Can you clearly explain the problem, intervention, expected results, implementation approach and evidence of what your organisation has already achieved?

📌 Registration is only the beginning. Funding readiness is about demonstrating organisational capacity.

Is your business growing faster than your documentation?

There is a stage in every entrepreneur’s journey when things start moving quickly.

More customers.
More orders.
More suppliers.

You have a great business idea.
You have customers.
You have sales.
You know exactly how much funding you need.

Then the funder asks:

“Please share your business documents.”

And suddenly, you realise they are scattered across WhatsApp, your laptop, old emails, or they don't exist at all.

Before you approach a funder, investor or financing partner, make sure these 5 documents are ready:

☑️ 1. Business Plan
Can someone understand your business model, market, strategy, growth plan and funding needs?

☑️ 2. Company Profile
Can you clearly communicate who you are, what you do, who you serve and why your business is credible?

Can you demonstrate your sales, expenses, cash flow and financial performance?

☑️ 4. Contracts & Agreements
Can you show evidence of important customer, supplier, partner or other business relationships?

Your Thesis Is Not Impossible. You May Simply Need Clarity. 🎓

You’ve been staring at the same thesis chapter for hours.

You rewrite a paragraph. Delete it. Write it again.

You read another journal article, hoping it will finally make sense.

Then the thought comes:

“Maybe I’m just not good enough to do this.”

But sometimes, the problem isn’t your ability.

It’s clarity.

You may have a good research idea, but struggle to define the problem.
You may have collected enough literature, but cannot see the gap.
You may have research questions, but they don’t align with your methodology.
You may have pages of writing, but no clear argument holding them together.

A thesis becomes much less intimidating when you can clearly answer:

What am I studying?
Why does it matter?
What do we already know?
What is missing?
How will my study address it?

You don't need to know everything before you begin.

You need to know what you are trying to say, and why it matters.

And if you're stuck, asking for help isn't failure. Sometimes, you simply need another pair of eyes to help you find the thread in your ideas.

Your Research Proposal Doesn’t Need More Big Words. It Needs a Clear Argument.

You spend hours rewriting your proposal because it “doesn’t sound academic enough.”

So you replace simple words with complicated ones. You make sentences longer. You add technical language.

And somehow, the proposal becomes harder to understand, not stronger.

Here’s the thing:

Academic writing is not about making your reader struggle. It is about making your thinking clear.

A strong research proposal should help the reader quickly understand:

🔹 What is the research problem?
🔹 Why does it matter?
🔹 What does existing research tell us?
🔹 What gap remains?
🔹 How will you investigate it?

Clear, well-structured writing helps communicate ideas effectively, demonstrate credibility and make an argument more persuasive.

So before asking, “How can I make this sound more academic?”

Ask:

“Can someone reading this clearly understand what I am trying to say?”

That is where strong academic writing begins.
