A South African farmer is earning praise after building small shade shelters across his land to help animals escape the intense midday heat. Made from simple materials and placed at intervals, the structures give livestock and passing wildlife a place to rest, cool down, and recover before moving on. The thoughtful project has touched many people online, showing how small actions can make a real difference. It’s a reminder that caring for the land also means caring for the animals that share it. With 18,000 layer birds producing at 92–96%, the farm would produce about 16,560–17,280 eggs per day, which is roughly 552–576 trays (30 eggs per tray). If a tray is sold at an average farm-gate price of about KSh 400, the farm can generate around KSh 220,800–230,400 per day, which is about KSh 6.6M–6.9M per month. A layer bird eats approximately 110–140 grams of feed per day, so 18,000 birds consume about 1,980–2,520 kg of feed daily (around 40–50 bags of 50 kg feed). If one bag costs about KSh 3,000, the daily feed cost is roughly KSh 120,000–150,000, giving a monthly feed cost of about KSh 3.6M–4.5M. After subtracting feed, the farm may remain with roughly KSh 2.1M–3.0M per month before other expenses like labour, vaccines, electricity, trays, and transport.
