Good morning Tea farmers,

Did you know KTDA currently has six operational hydropower plants in East of Rift: Imenti, Lower Nyamindi, Gura, North Mathioya, Chania, and Nyambunde,while KTDA has Zero in West of Rift?

The six operational hydropower plants supply power to a total of 17 KTDA tea factories in that East of Rift.

Buying grid from Kenya power costs ~KES 15 per kWh (typical Kenya industrial rate)
• Hydropower internal cost ~KES 5 per kWh
• So savings = KES 10 per kWh

Thus, saving per kg of green leaf:

0.588/kWh/kg× KES 10 = KES 5.88{ saved perkg}.

That’s why we are saying our Tea farmers from West of Rift deserve better prices like those of East of Rift.
