For I was ashamed to request of the king an es**rt of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, ‘The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.’
Ezra 8:22 (NKJV)

Ezra looked over the people gathered beside the river before the long journey to Jerusalem began. Ahead of them lay hundreds of miles of rugged country. Along with their families, the priests had been entrusted with silver, gold, and sacred articles for the temple. The road was known to be dangerous, and a convoy carrying such treasures would have attracted the wrong kind of attention. One request to the Persian king could have secured an armed es**rt. It seemed like the sensible thing to do. Yet Ezra paused because he had already declared that God's hand was upon those who seek Him.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8 (NKJV)

Have you ever cleaned a dirty window and been surprised by how much brighter everything appeared? The trees were always green. The sky was always blue. Nothing outside had changed. The only difference was that the dirt had been wiped away. Sometimes our hearts work the same way. We wonder why God seems distant or why His guidance feels unclear, when the real issue is not that He has moved. It is that worry, pride, bitterness, or unconfessed sin has slowly clouded our view of Him.

What Is Keeping You from Seeing God?

When Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart,” He was talking about people who make mistakes. He was describing people whose hearts genuinely belong to God. They are not trying to live one way on church days and another during the week. They are not interested in putting on a spiritual performance for others.

Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt… even if you say to this mountain, “Be removed and be cast into the sea,” it will be done.’”
Matthew 21:21 (NKJV)

Picture the disciples standing around a fig tree that had looked perfectly healthy the day before. Its leaves had promised fruit, but Jesus had found none. Now the tree was completely withered. They stared at it, trying to make sense of what they had just seen. Jesus seized the moment to teach them a lesson they would never forget. Referring to the mountain before them, He said that faith without doubt could command it to be thrown into the sea. He was not encouraging His followers to rearrange the landscape. He was teaching them that no obstacle standing in the way of God's purposes is too formidable for Him.

Facing Life's Mountains with Faith

The timing of those words mattered.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.

2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (NIV)

A euphoric Roman general has just returned from battle. He is leading a procession. In it are jubilant soldiers, singing at the top of their voice.

Look closely and you will see captives matching in the parade as it passes through city streets. No souvenir has a greater significance than this.

The victory must not only be seen and heard; it must also be smelled. Incense is burned generously. And so the triumphant party marches through the streets, amid cheers from the witnessing crowds. The valiant general leads the way.

Paul, borrowing from this scenario, wrote, “But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.” 2 Corinthians 2:14-15.

Psalms 15:1 (NIV)
To achieve anything of lasting value, one has to pay a price. This cost could be in form of relationships, time, money and other resources. The sacrifices can be summarized as a list of dos and don’ts. There are habits to drop and others to adopt.
To enter heaven, too, you have to adhere to a list of dos and don’ts. David’s version is found in Psalm 15. He begins by asking, “LORD, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?” (Psalm 15:1).
The answers are in verses 2-5:
1. Do: walk uprightly
2. Do what is righteous
3. Do: speak the truth from your heart
4. Don’t backbite
5. Don’t harm others
6. Don’t speak evil concerning your friend
7. Do: despise those who do evil
8. Do: Honor those who fear the Lord
9. Do: Keep your promises even it hurts to do so
