Daily Devotional – Saturday, June 6, 2026
As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a spring. The rain also covers it with pools.
Psalms 84:6 (NKJV)

Psalm 84 describes pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem to worship the Lord. Along the way they passed through the Valley of Baca. No one knows its exact location today, but its name has long been associated with weeping and tears. Some scholars also connect it with the Balsam tree, whose resin forms tear-like drops on its bark. Whether the name pointed to sorrow, dryness, or both, the message was clear. This was not the easiest part of the journey. Yet those who longed to meet with God could not avoid it. They had to pass through it.

Why Every Pilgrim Had to Pass This Way

The pilgrims in this psalm were not people with trouble-free lives. They faced the same challenges and uncertainties that travellers always faced. The difference was that their strength came from the Lord. Their hearts were fixed on Him.

Daily Devotional – Saturday, April 30, 2022
Pray without ceasing
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV)

At some point in my spiritual journey, I did not understand what it meant to ‘pray without ceasing’ (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Did the Lord expect me to stop working and spend all the time on my knees?

Is He not the one who taught that I do not need to use many words in prayer because He already knows what I need before I ask? (Matthew 6:7-8).

I thank God because He gradually expounded this text to me.

We Always Ought to Pray and Not Lose Heart

First, He taught me that praying without ceasing meant being persistent. According to Luke, the main lesson in the Parable of the Persistent Widow was that “that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.” (Luke 18:1).

Like the widow, as I continue petitioning God, I spend more time with Him. That way, He reveals my weaknesses and gradually gives me the power to overcome them. In essence, persistent prayer transforms character.

In our walk with God, we must guard against mediocrity. God has endowed each of us with talents and abilities. If we cooperate with Him, we can utilize these endowments to the maximum, hence becoming a blessing to ourselves, humanity, and God’s work.

Beware of Averageness

Jabez was not satisfied with asking God for abundant blessings. He became more specific as he continued with his prayer. His second request to God was to “enlarge my territory.” (1 Chronicles 4:10). What kind of territory was Jabez talking about? How small was it?

It is possible that Jabez was talking about land. Who wouldn’t want more land to grow more food or keep more animals? Perhaps he was living in a tiny shack with his poor family. A larger space could mean more freedom and happiness.

My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD. In the morning, I will direct it to You, and I will look up.

To paraphrase a Swahili saying, “A good day is known in the morning.” In essence, how you begin your day, determines whether it will be a good or bad one.

Jesus instructed us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33). Our first duty as Christians is to start the day with God. When the mind is fresh, let us set our priorities and the tempo for the day.

My Voice You Shall Hear in the Morning

Like David, let us affirm, “My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD. In the morning, I will direct it to You, and I will look up.” (Psalms 5:3). Let us ask for God’s approval before our feet touch the floor.

I saw this Facebook post recently: “He has done it again! God has woken us up!” Yes, today is a gift from God!

Daily Devotional – Friday, May 5, 2026
One generation shall praise Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts.
Psalms 145:4 (NKJV)

One of the most powerful influences in my spiritual life is my late maternal grandfather. I learnt my earliest lessons about God along streams as we grazed cows and sheep. Often, he would ask me to carry his Bible as we herded the animals, then read the book loud to me as we rested on the grass.

The Legacy That Began by a Stream

Under his guidance, I learned how to recite the Lord's Prayer and the Ten Commandments. I can still remember his heavy bass voice as he belted out tunes from the vernacular hymnal. I recall walking with Him to church and listening to him recite some enormous portions of the book of Psalms from memory. He taught me to fear, worship, and obey God in a memorable manner.

As the psalmist had observed millennia before, my grandpa’s generation praised God and declared Him mighty works to the next generation.

Whirlwinds are beautiful, but dangerous. From a distance, we enjoy and marvel at their rotations and spins. Underneath them, though, are destroyed houses, businesses, farms, and livelihoods. Gales are equally destructive and disruptive. They bring life to a standstill and occasion injuries and death.

Every Wind of Doctrine

The Apostle Paul describes a different version of whirlwinds and gales that were likely to disrupt spiritual growth in the early church. Paul states that spiritual gifts equip the saints for ministry and edify the body of Christ towards perfection.

Resurrection plants appear like dried-out balls of twigs in the desert. String winds carry these balls away for long distances. Strangely enough, these plants can remain dormant for years, appearing to have died, but that is not the end of their story.

When Plants Come Back to Life

When they finally come in touch with water, irrespective of how many years have passed, resurrection plants live up to their name. They suddenly spring to life. They unfurl their dry leaves as if by magic. Moreover, their buried seeds germinate from the desert soil in a matter of hours and turn the desert green.

In a few weeks, they flower and develop seeds before the sun scorches them again into presumed oblivion. Such is the magic of these plants. You can't write them off.

There is a tempo and a rhythm to the vast fabric of existence that God has woven together. This cadence, this temporal movement, permeates all aspect of our lives. Every moment is carefully woven into the tapestry of time, from the joyful moments of birth to the somber moments of death, from planting seasons to harvest seasons.

Believe in God’s Impeccable Timing

Humans have trouble understanding time all the time. We yearn for instant satisfaction, prompt resolutions to our problems, and prompt answers to our prayers. However, God's timetable defies our limited comprehension. His timing is impeccable, incomprehensible, and beyond our power to comprehend.

The Lazarus story appears in the New Testament. When Jesus learned of Lazarus's condition, He purposefully postponed His trip to Bethany. Lazarus had been dead for four days when Jesus came.

It is the virtue of fortitude, or courage in the face of difficulty, that every Christian is exhorted to practice. We are able to withstand adversity, hold fast to our faith, and grow closer to Christ because of our fortitude.

The Benefits of Courage

James 1:12 teaches us the benefits of enduring hardship. Our difficulties serve a purpose; they are meant to try and fortify our faith. We show our love for God and our faith in His promises when we endure hardships. The crown of life is the ultimate prize for this steadfastness.
