If you are starting a business, concentrate on the essentialsābuilding the business and solving a real problem.
Itās tempting to start off with grand ideas like renting expensive office space in Westlands or Kilimani, buying luxurious office cutlery, or even furnishing your workspace to look like a Fortune 500 company.
But hereās the thing: none of these fancy additions will matter if your business isnāt solving a problem or generating revenue.
Instead of focusing on appearances, focus on the core of your business; what value are you bringing to the market?
Early-stage businesses should prioritize solving customer pain points and building products or services that offer genuine solutions. Real growth comes from your ability to provide value, not from how lavish your office looks or the high-end furniture you buy.
Another common mistake is hiring staff you donāt need in the beginning. Do you really need a personal assistant when youāre just starting out? Probably not.
Start lean. Invest your resources where they matter most: product development, marketing, and customer service. Hiring personnel should be strategic, aimed at solving immediate business needs, not just to look good on paper.
In addition, avoid overspending on non-essentials that donāt directly contribute to the growth of your business.
Fancy gadgets, over-the-top office equipment, or high-profile consultants might seem like theyāre elevating your status, but in the early days, they only drain your capital.
Stay agile, stay focused, and be adaptable. As your business grows and your revenue increases, you can scale appropriately, but only after youāve laid a strong foundation. Smart business decisions now will give you the ability to expand sustainably later.
The lesson is simple: "Focus on impact, not image. Build value, not vanity."
