Could Eldoret become Kenya’s second medical hub after Nairobi?
The future of healthcare in Kenya is being shaped by health insurance reforms, digital health, telemedicine, innovation and stronger local health systems.
Eldoret is uniquely positioned for this transition—with MTRH, Moi University, several Level 4 and 5 private hospitals, a crop of almost all Categories of medical professionals and specialists, research institutions both private a nd public and a growing health-tech ecosystem.
The ongoing transition of AMPATH-supported programmes in Uasin Gishu also raises an important question: How do we sustain and scale successful health innovations when donor-supported programmes transition to local ownership? Can the local structures equal what Ampath was doing?
SHA reforms must make healthcare financing more sustainable, while telemedicine and digital systems can expand specialist access beyond physical hospital walls.
Eldoret has the infrastructure, talent and regional reach. What is missing to make it Kenya’s second medical hub?
I would love to hear from healthcare professionals, policymakers, investors and innovators:
What one reform would you prioritise to transform Eldoret into a regional healthcare and medical innovation hub?
