In Kenya, 81 percent of workers are employed in the informal sector and jobs for young people are scarce and fragile. The Swahili word โ€œSoteโ€ means ''everybody'' and describes our philosophy of inclu

sion and search for high social returns. Sote Hub is a spin off the Sote ICT project we have managed last six years in working with over 200 high schools in Taita Taveta and Kenya reaching over 10,000 students and continues to date. Sote Hub works with graduates and SMEs in turn by providing consultancy and incubation services where they can grow their ideas into businesses. Through our incubation and entrepreneurship support programs, we have worked with over 250 MSMEs with over 40% women-led and provided job/ internship matching opportunities to about 800 youth.

Becoming a Blue Incubator

Last week, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dar es Salaam, we joined over 24 innovation hubs in Tanzania and several ecosystem stakeholders for the Blue Incubation Workshop: "Building Blue Incubators: Unlocking Tanzania's Blue Economy" organised under the BIC Africa programme.

Our Director, David Ogiga, shared Sote Hub's own lighthouse story, our journey into the blue economy, the storms we navigated, and the lessons that shaped us into what we are today. It was a rare moment of honest, practitioner-led storytelling.

Our Head of Innovations, Kenneth Njihia, took the meeting through the full blueprint from what it truly means to become a Blue Hub, to the models, support systems, impact measurement frameworks, stakeholder mapping tools, and the certification pathway that can help hubs across the continent position themselves credibly within the blue economy.

We had an enriching presentation from Juliana Kayombo, Advisor, Access to Finance and Business Incubation Services, Stawi Bluu (Prosper Blue), on the projects, enduring legacy of GIZ in the blue economy spaces, and the many opportunities to look out for ahead.

Special recognition goes to Lamine Diallo, Head of Sector at the EU Delegation to Tanzania, for his support and commitment to advancing innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable Blue Economy development across the region

Appreciating Robert Sanders and EBN-European Business and Innovation Centre Network for creating the platform for this convening and to the partners, the European Union, GIZ Tanzania (STAWIBLUU).

Keep it here for more in the coming days.

The journey toward building an inclusive and thriving Blue Economy in Kwale County is well underway.

The BlueBiz Program, funded by the Mastercard Foundation and implemented by TechnoServe in partnership with Sote Hub, is equipping 1,000 young people particularly women, persons with disabilities, and refugees with practical entrepreneurship and technical skills to unlock opportunities in the fisheries and tourism sectors.

Over a 16-week training period, participants are developing competencies in fish processing, cold chain management, hospitality, tour guiding, water sports, cultural tourism, and business management. They are also being linked to finance, markets, and enterprise growth opportunities through the Bahari Boost Challenge Fund.

As implementation progresses, the initiative is nurturing a new generation of entrepreneurs and community leaders driving sustainable livelihoods, inclusive growth, and innovation across the coastal Blue Economy ecosystem.

The Convergence Fika Series: Blue and Green Meets Policy brought together founders, policymakers, and ecosystem builders for a powerful conversation on how blue and green innovations can drive climate-resilient growth across East Africa.

A special thank you to our insightful panelists: Dennis Onkangi, Founder, Kuza Freezer โ„ข, Charles Ayako, Coast Regional Coordinator, Ministry of Youth, Jane Wanyoike, Equity Bank Limited, Mercy Mghanga, Founder, CWIFE Seafood Supply, who unpacked the policy and financing challenges affecting the blue and green sectors.

The discussions highlighted critical issues, including limited access to finance for women entrepreneurs, high taxation, policy gaps within the Fisheries Act, challenges around unlicensed artisanal fishing, foreign vessel regulation gaps, and the continued underrepresentation of women in policy conversations despite women driving nearly 90% of trade within the sector.

With Kenyaโ€™s vast 230,000 kmยฒ Blue Economy holding immense potential, the dialogue reinforced the urgent need for stronger policies, inclusive financing, sustainable investment, and collaborative action to unlock opportunities for communities, entrepreneurs, and future generations

A compelling pitch can be the turning point for any startup, SME, or MSME; itโ€™s often the first impression that captures investor interest and opens doors to funding, partnerships, and growth opportunities.

At Sote Hub, we recognize the power of a well-crafted pitch, which is why we equip our entrepreneurs with the skills, confidence, and strategic insight needed to communicate their value effectively.

Through tailored mentorship, pitch training, and exposure to platforms such as investor forums and demo days, we ensure entrepreneurs are not only investment-ready but also connected to the right investors for their ventures, increasing their chances of securing the support they need to scale.

Elevate Blue โ€“ Tanzania ๐ŸŒŠ

The Elevate Blue incubation program is underway at the Tanzania Commission for Science & Technology (COSTECH) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together 24 innovative entrepreneurs for an intensive training focused on strengthening sustainable businesses in the Blue Economy.

This week (13thโ€“14th), participants are currently undergoing practical financial management training led by trainer Lucy, equipping them with essential skills in financial planning, business sustainability, and growth strategies needed to scale their ventures successfully.

The training continues to create a dynamic learning environment where startups are building stronger foundations, refining their business models, and preparing to unlock new opportunities within the blue economy and marine sustainability sectors. We are excited to see the innovative ideas and solutions emerging from this incredible cohort across Tanzania

Elevate Blue is an entrepreneurial support program, designed as an end-to-end targeting activation and stimulation for innovations, growth, and access to finance and market for businesses in the Blue Economy and Marine Litter
