One of the biggest lessons emerging from today’s food sector discussions is that food security is no longer only an agricultural issue — it is a supply chain issue.
Farmers may produce, but without efficient aggregation, storage, logistics, and reliable market access, value is lost long before food reaches consumers. Strengthening these connections has become just as important as increasing production.
Across many markets, SMEs play a critical role in bridging this gap. They organise distribution, manage processing, and connect rural production to urban demand. When these enterprises operate efficiently, entire food systems become more stable and predictable.
As Africa’s population grows, the conversation must expand from “how much we produce” to “how effectively food moves from farm to market.”
Building resilient food systems will depend on collaboration, structure, and long-term thinking across the entire value chain.
