Who can operate an e-citizen account in Kenya?

The type of e-citizen account could fall under either of the four categories below:
 Kenyan citizens account:
 Foreign Residents Account:
 Visitor(eVisa) Account:
 Linked Business Account.

Registering Your Business

In order to legally operate a business in Kenya, you are required to register your business.This can be under the following categories:

a) Certificate of Registration - Sole proprietorship or partnerships
b) Certificate of Incorporation - Local companies
c) Certificate of Compliance - Foreign companies

Company and business registrations are done through the e-citizen online platform (https://www.ecitizen.go.ke). One can do the registration themselves, or enlist the help of a lawyer/incorporator. (e.g. https://inc.genius.co.ke).

Limited liability partnerships (LLPs) registrations are still manual and are done at the company registry. The registry is located in the Nairobi Central Business District, in Harambee House along Harambee Avenue.

The Government offers a platform to provide information on the registration process under the Business Registration Services (https://brs.go.ke/).

What kind of businesses fall under the category of micro or small enterprises?

A firm, trade, service, industry or a business activity in:

1. the manufacturing sector, where the investment in plant and machinery or the registered capital of the enterprise
- does not exceed KES 10 million - micro enterprise
- is between KES 10 and 50 million - small enterprise; and

2. the service sector and farming enterprises where the investment in equipment or registered capital of the enterprise
- does not exceed KES 5 million - micro enterprise
- is between KES 5 and 20 million - small enterprise

The Micro and Small Enterprise Act of 2012 defines micro enterprises as those that have a maximum annual turnover of KES 500,000 with less than 10 employees. Small enterprises generate income between KES 500,000 and 5 million and employ 10-49 people. Medium enterprises are not covered under the act, but are generally categorised as enterprises that generate between KES 5 million and 800 million per annum and employ 50-99 employees.
