🏡 WHEN YOU SAY “I DO”
Articles of Covenant Love

Building a house takes planning, patience, commitment and care. So does building a marriage.

But what happens when things don't go according to plan? And do we truly understand the responsibility that comes with sharing our lives with another person?

This Wednesday, we continue our conversations with Apostle Solomon Opala as we explore two important principles:

🔹 CREATION: Build a new wineskin. Every challenge is solvable.

🔹 STEWARDSHIP: A spouse is a sacred trust.

Whether you're preparing for marriage or hoping to build a lasting relationship, there's something valuable to reflect on.

ARE YOU MAKING ROOM FOR SOMEONE NEW?

We all come into relationships with a story.

Some have loved and lost. Some have been through divorce or separation. Some have never married. And each journey comes with its own experiences, lessons, fears, expectations and hopes.

But wanting someone in your life and being ready for someone new may not always be the same thing.

So we’re starting a four-part Mature Singles conversation series with:

SESSION 1: ARE YOU REALLY READY FOR A NEW RELATIONSHIP?

What does being ready actually look like?

How do you know when your past is informing you - rather than holding you back?

And have you truly made emotional and practical room for another person?

Before we say “I do”, there are questions worth asking ourselves.

Do I know how to love?

And perhaps even more importantly…

Whom will I become in this covenant?

These are some of the questions we will explore in our first conversation in the Articles of Covenant Love series.

Join us on Wednesday, 23 September at 8pm for a thoughtful conversation with Apostle Solomon Opala, hosted by Eva.

WHY SO MANY OLDER SINGLE MEN WANT COMPANIONSHIP BUT RARELY TAKE THE FIRST STEP

One thing I've noticed through my work with mature singles is that many people assume older single men simply aren't interested in meeting anyone new.

The reality may be quite different.

Research suggests that many older single men would welcome companionship but often take a long time to put themselves back out there. It's not always because they don't want to. Often, it's because taking that first step feels harder than most people realise.

For many, it has been decades since they last dated. The social landscape has changed, technology has changed, and even the expectations around meeting people have evolved. Starting again can feel intimidating.

Some are still healing from divorce. Others are carrying the grief of losing a spouse. Many have lost not only a partner but also the social circles that came with married life. It's easy to become isolated without ever intending to.

Then there's the fear of rejection. That isn't unique to younger people. In fact, after experiencing heartbreak or loss later in life, taking another emotional risk can feel even more daunting.

I've also come to believe that many older men are not avoiding companionship. They are avoiding uncomfortable situations.

Walking into a room where you know no one, trying to strike up conversations, or feeling pressure to impress someone can be overwhelming at any age.

Perhaps that's why structured social gatherings seem to make such a difference. When people come together over a shared meal, a discussion, a walk, or another common interest, the pressure to "find someone" fades. Conversations happen more naturally, friendships form, and genuine connections have a chance to grow.

Maybe the conversation shouldn't be about why older single men don't mingle.

Maybe it should be about whether we're creating enough welcoming spaces where they feel comfortable taking that first step.

That's the kind of environment we're building at Connect Circle Community, where mature singles can meet naturally and without pressure.

Conversations with Eva

I'VE BEEN MEANING TO CALL

Recently, I found myself thinking about a sentence we've all said.

"We must catch up soon."

Most of the time, we mean it.

We really do.

Then life happens.

Work.

Family.

Deadlines.

Fatigue.

Tomorrow becomes next week.

Next week becomes next month.

And before we realise it, years have passed.

It made me wonder.

How many friendships haven't ended...

they've simply been postponed?

Perhaps most friendships don't die because of conflict.

Perhaps they die because both people keep meaning to call.

We assume there will always be another weekend.

Another birthday.

Another Christmas.

Another opportunity.

But life never tells us which conversation will be the last.

Perhaps that's why regret so often begins with the same words.

"I've been meaning to call."

The older I get, the more I realise that relationships rarely disappear dramatically.

They fade quietly.

One postponed conversation at a time.

One unanswered message.

One cancelled coffee.

One promise to catch up "when things settle down."

The trouble is...

life rarely settles down.

Perhaps we spend so much time planning the next conversation...

that we forget this one is the only one we're guaranteed.

Maybe the people we miss most aren't waiting for a long visit.

Or an expensive lunch.

Or a perfect time.

Maybe they're simply waiting for the phone to ring.

Perhaps the greatest gift we can give someone isn't an hour of our time.

Perhaps it's sixty seconds of our attention.

A call that simply says,

"You crossed my mind."

Because sometimes that's all another human being needs to hear.

Maybe today is a good day to stop meaning to...

and start dialling.

SAFE PEOPLE

Questions that make us think. Conversations that help us grow.

We hear a lot these days about the importance of safe spaces.

And rightly so.

In a world where many people carry invisible wounds, safe spaces matter.

Everyone deserves to belong somewhere.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.

Everyone deserves to be heard.

But lately I've found myself wondering if we've overlooked something.

Perhaps every safe space begins with a safe person.

Not someone who always knows what to say.

Not someone who has all the answers.

Simply someone with whom another human being feels safe enough to be real.

That made me stop and ask myself...

What makes someone safe?

Because every time we decide whether to tell another person what's really going on inside us, we make a calculation.

Will they understand?

Will they judge me?

Will they think I'm weak?

Will they lose respect for me?

Will they tell someone else?

Will this change the way they see me?

Perhaps that's why so many conversations never move beyond the surface.

We talk about work. The weather. Politics. The World Cup. The children. The traffic.

Almost anything except the things that keep us awake at night.

Not because those things don't matter.

But because we aren't sure who is safe enough to hear them.

It takes courage to be known.

While writing one of my recent stories, Built For Noise, I found myself reflecting on this in a way I hadn't expected.

A man receives devastating news while walking alone on a nature trail.

Two strangers notice that something isn't right.

They don't know his name.

They don't know his story.

They don't ask him to explain himself.

They simply slow down.

They walk beside him.

They buy him a cup of tea.

They follow him home to make sure he gets there safely.

Then they quietly keep showing up.

It struck me that before they became his friends...

they first became safe people.

They simply offered something many of us are quietly searching for.

A place where another human being no longer has to pretend.

I wonder how different our homes would feel...

our friendships...

our workplaces...

our communities...

if more of us decided not just to look for safe people...

but to become one.

Because perhaps the greatest gift we can offer another human being isn't our advice. Our solution.

Perhaps it's simply our presence.

A presence that quietly says,

"You don't have to perform here."

"You don't have to have all the answers."

"You don't have to pretend with me."

Maybe that's where every safe space begins.

With one safe person.

When you think about the safest person you've ever known, what made you feel safe with them?

And perhaps the harder question...

Who feels safe enough to be completely themselves around you?
